In my experience, reaching way back to winter rallying my 2002tii, and more recently my F80 M3, there are different pros/cons to narrow vs. wide winter tires. Narrow gets you more penetration into the snow. Wider gives you more float, which can be good in deep snow. Normally digging down gets you better traction, but with a car such as the i8 with low clearance, a wider snow tire can work well provided there is sufficient room in the wheelwell. Plus in many locations, snow is part-time, so a wider, W or Z rated high performance tire can provide excellent handling in dry and rain conditions with sufficient snow ability.
