BMW issues new software updates for i3's at least twice per year, and pays the dealers for the time it takes to install it. Therefore, all dealer techs are super-diligent about applying latest BMW i3 firmware updates.
I know BMW's that never got updates for 5 years. But, unfortunately, you are unlikely to be so lucky with the history of i3/i8 recalls for programming.
