If the 2017 still uses the NBT and you want to upgrade to the newer NBT-EVO, it requires all new electronics. I think that it was Bimmer-Tech selling the DIY kit, but please make sure that you are sitting down before you look at the price tag!
The only saving grace may be that cellular carriers are phasing out the 3G coverage that the NBT uses in the next 1-2 years. If you have an active subscription, BMW *may* offer (my guess) a discounted upgrade to a newer iDrive platform that supports 4G/LTE. Pure speculation and a huge gamble, but we can all hope.....
