I had the same noise, but it was gone after the AC refil. Still, I decided a couple of weeks later to change the compressor… USD/EUR/CHF 2500 is actually a decent price, as we know that this is issue will be completely solved forever, and the costs are fully in line with the costs of normal issue of any 6-10 year old BMW.
I want to point as well, that the i8 is a very reliable car (at least for me, from 2014). Beside the AC compressor, and electric heater (mine is still working), I never had other major issues.
