Good Idea Here
Unless Tesla Motors is blowing hot air with its future Model S's (Eses/Esses?), BMW better "get cracking" on something like this. There is likely to be some cross-over shopping between a 5 series and the Model S as the space, amenities, price and performance will be comparable.
The car/wagon/minivan shape is going to offer the most usable interior space with a low coefficient of drag. BMWs deserves props on the i8 as it has some clever clear covers on its back end sides to create a box-shaped low-drag form without the corresponding boxy appearance.
Also if the batteries are under the floor (the best place for a low center of gravity) then the vehicle has to be taller since the occupants will be seated on top of the batteries. If you have seen a Nissan Leaf in person you will get the idea. The sorta-tall Honda Fit uses this same principle, except the front passengers are sitting on top of a gas tank. I do like the back-window styling on this concept drawing though.
Cheers!
