This is not supposed to be a logical car for a family of four. This is for a car lover, like the Porsche 918 Spyder. Not everything is about performance (whether that be MPG or speed) per dollar. Do you think the Bugatti Veyron is useless because a Switzer tuned Nissan GT-R is faster than it for less money? It's a technological showcase. This car is to promote BMW's 'i' division, like the Lexus LF-A was built to give Lexus's 'F' brand some credibility.

Will I ever buy this car? No, but I admire the fact that BMW is able to achieve such low 0-60 times, emissions, and fuel consumption. This technology will trickle down into consumer vehicles, such as the i3, i5, and regular BMWs.
