More to protect the engine from inactivity. Same with the i8.

The gasoline will deteriorate and lose octane count over time but it would take years for it to go really bad.

I run the ICE every once in a while and burn the fuel down to 1/4 tank. I realize that with the REX you can't do that unless you run down the battery. Nevertheless, I wouldn't worry about it.
