BMW NA has a terrible reputation for launching less than well thought through telematics services, then abruptly discontinuing them with no warning.
A more dramatic case in point is eCall on 2010-13 cars, dropped as of 12/31/16. Even if you paid for it through end of 2017 (standard 5 year plan on 2013 cars). BMW NA did the same thing with earlier (mid-/early-2000 cars), etc, etc.

I personally don't care, but Roundel is full of letters from distraught owners who don't know how they would call for help in case of an accident in their 2013 cars.

Internet via iDrive was always a dubious proposition. I guess it would appeal to those who don't own a smart phone, or prefer typing via iDrive knob instead of touch screen keyboard. I guess??!!?

On a related subject, does anyone know if BMW's RTTI service ($70/year) runs off FM's Traffic Message Channel (TMC), or cell data updates?
