The plug BMW chose to use is not yet the standard in the US for DCQC's so it's not capable of recharging in 30 except for one currently installed in California at a mall.
Correct. The SAE just recently developed and approved the CCS standard. Since there wasn't any officially sanctioned DC quick charge standard here in the US when Nissan started selling the LEAF, they used the DC quick charge system that Temco developed for Japan called CHAdeMO. When the LEAF launched in the US, there were no CHAdeMO chargers either, but a couple years later they are being installed. I suspect a similar path for the SAE CCS connector.

I'm actually going to the LA Auto show tomorrow and I have an interview scheduled with Robert Healey, the head on EV infrastructure in the US for BMW and this topic (DC quick charge, SAE/CHAdeMO) is what my interview will be all about. I'll post a link to my story here once it's up as long as the admin allows it.
