When you have aggressive brake energy recovery (i.e., the generator acts like a huge brake), the actual brake pads do not need to be particularly big. In effect, you have significant drivetrain braking and the brake pads to stop you. The actual brake pads in the thing should last for a VERY long time.

In one of the articles, it indicated that the DC fast charge capability is optional? Seems like it should be standard. While a typical residential power setup doesn't have the voltages required to make those work, it isn't as big an issue in commercial or public parking areas.

It will be interesting to see the full option list for the i3 in the USA.
