No, but similar criticisms can be levelled at a lot of cars, a brand new 330d would never pay for itself over a £500 eBay special E30...
Fuel economy simply can't figure into ownership costs when spending even half this money
for me the i8 would probably need to clock up 1,000,000 miles to pay for itself.
It's about making a car that people want to buy emotionally... to introduce a new wave of technology to the Brand (and therefore the premium car segment).. I'm sure the i8 will sell well enough.. although I really doubt BMW are expecting to make a profit on the cost of the VisionED program (may the part cost of each car though?) at this stage.
