Unfortunately, BMW now only offers fluffy cars.. with zero BMW heritage & focus.. the reason after 30 years of being a BMW enthusiast, I can honestly say there is not a current car in BMW's lineup that I would want to own. That is pretty sad, given that 10 years ago I coveted many BMWs. Today, I am told to wait two more years, until BMW graces us with the M2...

Problem is, Many are not going to wait on BMW to find their focus, as I have already been waiting YEARS for them to show me something, & the i8 isn't it, (nor is the M3 or M4). I really hope the M2 can save BMW's image & heritage, if not I doubt I'll ever come back...
I totally believe there can be a place for both. So long as that M2 is exciting. the M235i seems extremely promising. Also really like thing the M3/M4 not sure what your beef with those are so long as things like the M235i and potentially the M2 exist.
