I'd say a good 99% of the population is over burning $20/day worth of petrol. They'd jump on any worthy hybrid if the price didn't nullify fuel savings. The other problem so far is that all viable options are ugly and cater to environmentalists - not car enthusiasts.
The Tesla S could prove the possibilities in a couple years.
But of course, like you, I'm not about to trade my M for a Prius or Volt. lol
In due time. It's not crazy to think you might be driving an $80k M hybrid with 600hp and 50mpg efficiency in 2020.
