As discussed the R1S has too harsh a ride with not enough passenger comfort features for a family like the EV9/GV90 class. Again, different use cases for different buyers. The Escalade IQ isn’t out yet but I don’t have a lot of faith in GM.

At the end of the day I would probably hold out for the iX7 as I’m just a BMW guy. That would translate to the iX being at 180k ish miles by then haha.
Maybe get yourself an iX LCI next year to hold you over? The Escalade has a 200 kwh battery. Range is very good, but charging that thing on a road trip is going to be a pain if you cannot find a fully functioning 350kw charger. Plus that thing is so damn big - wider than a regular Escalade - so parking is going to be a chore in a city or even metro suburb.

I was very surprised how loud the engine whine is when I test drove the Rivian. It’s my second favorite EV brand, and that high pitched whine in the cabin was a surprise to hear from an otherwise luxurious product.

Until I drove an IX I thought most EVs had motor whine. More recently Ive been in several Tesla’s….a model y AWD with no whine and a brand new model X with just a small amount of while. I test drove a Highland model three and its motors were pretty quiet. When I owned a 2018 Model 3 the whine was pronounced…which I hated. At 80 mph the stupid thing would “chirp” or “beep” as it bounced between accelerating and slowing on cruise.

We have the GT line EV9. Here it is chilling with my M4 and Kona N. We absolutely love it. As for the previous poster stating that H/K/G have horrendous reliability, that was a long time ago. I’ve had them for decades and when you keep up with scheduled maintenance you won’t have any issues. Speaking towards the OP, maybe outside of the US there’s glossy black plastic, but ours has none. I absolutely loath glossy black plastic trim and was thrilled to see it was not used in the EV9. Maybe Mercedes, Audi, and and the i5/i7 designers will eventually get that memo.

Sorry for the digression, but how do/did you like your LC500? You got quite the collection. I had a 2022 M4 that I traded in for a 2024 392 Wrangler. I'm considering the LC500. Someone in my town has one. Sounds amazing, even better than my Wrangler.

The LC is a forever car. It’s a work of art from any angle, it’s built like a tank, and it has the voice of an angel.

I’m thinking about getting rid of my M4 too. It’s either sell/trade, or drop some serious $$$ making the mediocre stereo and the less than amazing exhaust sound better.

I came to this board after looking at the iX. At first I absolutely hated the iX, but after seeing a white M-sport at my dealer and listening to the Bowers & Wilkins sound system I’m seriously considering getting one.

When they were first released, I thought what in the hell were the design team thinking, but after looking at many pix online, taking a test drive locally and then flying to pick up my iX, I have come to love the way it looks. It’s definitely polarising and idiosyncratic, which in an age of BEVs looking like ‘Jellybeans’ is perfect, imho.
Also as an M4 owner, you will really appreciate the ‘power’ of the car, because basically you are just a push of the accelerator away from ‘warp speed’; at least I feel so in my M60! lol
Good luck with your search!

I feel exactly the same way. When I first saw them on the road, I thought “no way I’d get one of those!” However, I’ve had my 2024 iX50 for about a month and have come to love how it looks. As I walk out to it across a parking lot for example, I find my self thinking “wow, I really love how this thing looks!” I’m excited every time I get in.

I had a Polestar 2 for 3 years. I loved the absolute silence. A tiny whir was audible when I floored it.

The iX can operate like that, but with zero whir. Or I can listen to Hans Zimmers’s soundtrack. It’s nice to have options.

Another thing from memory is that with the IX I know the connection to the wheels and the limit. With the EV9 though the grip was solid I couldn't feel my tyres so unsure how it'll behave when pushed to the limit.
I'm going to look up track testing videos for IX and EV9..should be something good on TV to watch for today evening.

Ok, I can’t help myself here with some snark…

I've driven a few Polestar 2's and thought the whine was intentional. It freaked me out the first time I noticed it, I really thought something was wrong because I didn't notice it before. But then once I heard it I couldn't un-hear it and it bothered me every time I gently accelerated.

Motor whine from a Rivian is less of an issue for me given the intended use of those vehicles. It reminds me of the older BMW rear differential whine (E39 days) or whine from the transfer case on some of the older Rangies before they moved to the viscous coupler. For a luxury vehicle, or daily driver, I agree that any motor whine is an unwanted 'feature'.

The 2 noise was barely noticeable. Maybe it's because in my car the tire / road noise was so loud. (It's loud).

In the Lucid Air I was shocked at how loud the motor was and that it was not artificial.

Having had a Tesla for 9 years one of the most beautiful things about driving an iX is the utter, total, absolute lack of any motor noise whatsoever. Period. Boom. End of story. And that's how it should be. Munro & Associates praised the iX's massive motor mounts as being among the beefiest and best in the industry.

Absolutely! My biggest beef with my model 3 was motor noise. I’m blessed with good hearing and that noise always bothered me. That said when I recently drove (for fun) a Model 3 Highland the motor noise seemed pretty muted. The IX has raised the bar pretty high…motor noise does not have to be part of the EV experience!

This may be a stupid question but does motor noise increase with age like an ICE engine does? Maybe by wearing of motor mounts?

I wouldn't think so. The mounts would have to be seriously diminished for that to happen. However, you're probably going to hear "clunks" from that type of wear before you start hearing the whine of the motor. Although it's also possible to get a clunking sound from worn splines on the half shafts from high torque motors and frequent hard acceleration. I think this was (is?) common on the R1's. This was also common on the early Range Rovers even though their motors were no where near the level of torque found in EVs.

Tesla was notorious for this with their Model S RWD motors. These things would start out silent but would get progressively noisier over the first 15,000 miles or so. Noisier to the point where it had to be replaced again. This noise was due to faulty bearing design. My Model S went through 4 motor replacements in 9 years. The first was at 500 miles (hard to believe but true) as the car was given to me with a defective drive unit. The last replacement was in year 7 or 8, when it failed outright, and covered under the 8 year unlimited mile DU warranty.

Competition is a great thing.
Many EV buyers (unlike us on this forum!) don’t have “brand loyalty “ and put their money where they get the most value and practically and efficiency.
I think cars like EV9 will dominate SUV EV market.
BMW has to setup its game.
How about starting with a refresh ix front design??
