2025 iX Highway Assistant Eye Tracking

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
So, for 2025 “[the Highway Assistant] partially automated driving function also includes Active Lane Change, when the driver can confirm suggested lane changes simply by looking in the corresponding exterior side mirror.” Does anyone know if this new feature requires new hardware that MY25 iXs come with? I assume that 2025 uses the same head unit as 2024. hugo_nz, can you chime in?

Yes, this feature almost certainly requires new hardware. So it's only available in 2025 models. But 2023-2024 models have Auto Lane Change, which is pretty cool too!

Can you cite your sources and what specific hardware is required?

You are right that I should be more careful with my language and not use absolutes - I'm not NomoTesla!!

But to date, we have not heard for any official statements from BMW regarding the ability to upgrade the 2024 iX to use Active Lane Change. It does seem strange that the 2024 i7 can upgrade to it, and the 2024 i5 already supports it, so it would be logical that the 2024 iX could also upgrade via OTA. But it's BMW who are infamous for not supporting features retroactively, so who really knows!!?!??!

Right, so you’re not 100% sure it requires new hardware. Just unclear whether an OTA update will be offered. That was my presumption as well.

I just picked up my new 2024 iX two weeks ago. At the time, both the salesperson and the BMW genius said that a software update would enable this feature in my car. They may have just been telling what I wanted to hear, but I’m somewhat hopeful. That said, I can also live without it and be happy. I’m very pleased with this car so far!

I would be quite surprised if this was rolled out to earlier cars. I would imagine ID8.5 hardware as the base requirement. The cluster camera is already pretty good so I can't imagine that would need replacing. I suspect that we will know more when BMW releases the Summer 2024 Model Update Measures later this month.

I have been inquiring about this feature ever since I have acquired my 24’ IX M60 few months ago and realizing it’s not enabled in my car. BMWUSA website had a description for 24MY HWY assistant describing that it also includes active lane assistant. Then bmwusa did a press-release that this feature will be added to 25MY iX. I have had multiple phone conversations with geniuses regarding the possibility of OTA for 24MY IX. There was never a definite answer either way. The consensus is though that 24MY iX has appropriate hardware to support this feature. One thing to remember, DAPP is made by MobilEye - so unlike Tesla who can release software updates for any part of their hardware, the update to ID made by BMW cannot directly update DAPP unit.

I know in grand scheme of things that’s not a huge feature, however I have been disappointed that the stated feature in the bmwusa description is missing in reality. I am assuming that’s been a mistake on their part to assume that because 24MY i5 has it, all other models with HWY assistant have it as well.

I am hopeful OTA is possible but not holding my breath.

MY24s with the DAPP do include the lane change assist feature; they only lack the feature allowing lane change just by looking in the mirror. I don’t think the eye tracking was ever advertised for the 24 model year.

Here is the screenshot from MY24 DAPP HWY assistant option for IX that I saved when it was up on bmwusa website

Interesting. It definitely didn't say that when I ordered in late 2023. Must’ve been prematurely updated for 2025.

My guess is it will be like my i7 with iDrive 8.5 and push as an OTA software update with no additional hardware needed. This debuted on the i5 and since has rolled out to all i7s with the Active driving assistant option. My guess is it will now trickle to older eligible iXs as BMW did with the i7s

Again, just a guess given prior history with this feature on other "older" BMWs

That’s very interesting! My iX m60 is stuck on 11/2023.42. I’m wondering when will I get the version you have. I have DAPP, so I’m assuming I have sufficient hardware for the eye tracking feature.

So after you have installed that update, eye tracking began working?

My iX M60 is on 11/2023.64 still and will never get this feature as well as plug and charge and other things as we have MGU21 that will remain on iDrive 8.0

My IX is on ID 8.5. Plug and charge works on mine. I do have unresolved time zone bug that makes my car think I’m in Berlin

You should be getting the March release within a month or two OTA. You could wait and see if it comes through OTA or wait until July at this point and make a warranty covered service appointment for “Bluetooth connection issues” and they will most certainly update the car to latest ISTEP while it’s there

That’s good to know. So there is some hope then I can get eye tracking active lane assist feature?

Your guess is as good as mine … but based on facts to date it’s possible bmw will retroactively give hardware equipped iXs the feature as they did to i7….. or you could get completely screwed by BMW as they have done in the past to others and maybe the g60 gets it as a courtesy to the “flagship vehicle” owners. BMW is a mystery

All I can do is wait. Once I get the latest update I will post about it here. Thank you 😊
