The BMW i8 and i3 vehicles were shown for the first time in New York at a private press event. The i8 will be a hybrid electric sports car and the i3 will be BMW's entry into the city EV (electric vehicle) segment. Both strive to offer not just efficiency but performance to boot.

  • 3 driving modes - electric, petrol, or both engines at once
  • 1,480 kg

  • Top speed: 250kph (limited)
  • 2.7 L/100km fuel economy
  • 35km pure electric range

  • Live photos from Frankfurt IAA debut

BMW i3 [Official Info/Media]
  • 125kw, 250Nm
  • 0-60 kph: 3.9 seconds
  • 0-100 kph: 7.9 seconds
  • batteries charge in 6 hours (standard socket)
  • 1 hour of recharge provides around 80% of battery capacity using high capacity charger

I was at the New York Sneak Peek Event on November 9th. Both cars look amazing. I'm thinking I'll have an i3 in my garage in 2013. The i8 is awesome, but it's going to cost around $160,000. It's not for mortals.

How does one drive a hybrid supercar that needs to be charged??? How does this hybrid system work because I bet no one will want to be inconvienced by that.

These are NOT supercars folks! They simply are their new hybrid line that "look" like supercars. Performance is that of any one of their current sports cars and less than their m cars

That is correct ... also I recommend to tint the windows since the German Dachshund (Dackel - Sausage Dog ... you know the one I mean) will constantly look into your window each time you stop at a stop sign or traffic light.

When is the i8 available. It would be nice if they put an ///M engine in it.

The i8 goes 0-60 in about 4.3 seconds. Listen to Rich Steinberg(manager of BMW electric vehicles & strategy) in the video say it will do in in "well under 5 seconds" The i3 isn't a supercar like the i8, nobody said it was.

They haven't released pricing, only said it would cost less than a base 5 series.
Guesses have it between 40 and 43k. Then there is a $7,500 federal tax credit so final cost could be somewhere around 33 & 36K

To be able to take these concepts and turn them into production in such a short time frame will be really incredible for BMW.
