I don't understand the point of making hyper sports cars with hybrid technology but seem like every manufacture has to have some so let it be. I probably never will afford one.

Once your warranty expires... and your battery dies... $$$
Hybrid battery life expectancy is ~3-7 years. I know most people don't drive cars that long on these forums, but imagine the normal consumer who keeps their car past this time frame. Your looking at an easy 3-5k investment in the battery replacement alone!

The i8 tech sounds very similar to another German car in the works (yes, I am aware that it is almost 10x more expensive)

This are the niche cars out tree hugging society is demanding. Every car maker is basically required to make this eco crap to make the govt and elite happy and off their backs so they can still make their 400hp+ cars that folks here love

I3 will be my next car for sure! Electric cars have a marked share of 3% here already because of tax reasons, it will probalbly cost the same as a 116d.
Scott, do you know if the battery package will be leased? The same solution as Renault use? Then you just trade in the batteries when they get worn out. Thats a very good solution, then the second hand value will be very good. |

With performance numbers like that and price of around 100k with unbelievable fuel economy...I think the i8 is a winner in my book. Let's just hope the ///M boys use some of that carbon fiber chassis for an exclusive ///M car.

Having just spent the weekend with a fully loaded Tesla model S I have completely renewed faith in the excitement that can be had with an electric car. The acceleration in that thing is literally breathtaking, its comfortable, and handles well enough to be fun. I couldn't help but think what a small bmw engineered vehicle with a similar powertrain would feel like.
Sports car companies that don't embrace these new powertrains are going to be left in the dust. Its not just about being green, it really is an incredible driving experience and I'd be left wanting if BMW didn't have a car to compete. |

As a hybrid sportscar, I thought the BMW i8 was going to be equipped with a DCT in addition to the (minimal) fuel savings it offers. I wonder if that was an error made on the part of Autocar or a change of strategy by BMW.

This god damned active sound bullshit needs to stop. Its not cool, neat, or innovative. This fake sound is embarrassing and quite frankly pathetic. We now know that it is no longer just the sound of your engine (such as with the M5), but that it adds sound (M135i). Which like I said is just pathetic. Pipe it in with a tube and membrane like you used too if its too quite, or how about you take out some of that sound deadening. Cutting corners isn't going to help BMW in the long run. This is something I would expect from Audi or Lexus, not BMW.

WOOOOOO More active sound!
*sarcasm* To be honest, I wouldn't even mind if I didn't really hear anything in this type of car. It's a hybrid, so if made sounds like an RC car, I wouldn't care as long as it was fast (see: Mission Impossible). By adding ActiveSound to this type of car, it's like BMW is trying to make it something it's not. And if IIRC from that video that was posted here comparing ActiveSound enabled/disabled, it sounded the same but having ActiveSound disabled made it slightly quieter (difference maybe greater in person?) so I don't really see a point in having it, it's not like it's putting out sounds like a Mercedes with a turbo V8... Concur. This thing will be perfect for people with short daily commutes. And the gasoline engine recharges the batteries anyway...

There were so many intersting parts of the video (I loved hearing the car in full electric mode, that was really cool). All this talk about active sound has been beaten to death already.
