BMW i3 Charges at First Ever Charging Station with Combo-Charging DC Fast Charging
BIMMERPOST NEWS BMW i3 Charges at First Ever Charging Station with Combo-Charging DC Fast Charging October 1, 2013 Woodcliff Lake, NJ – September 30, 2013... A BMW i3 was fully charged in under 30-minutes today at the first-ever public charging station in the US to offer the SAE Combo-Charging fast charging system. The public charging station is located at the Fashion Valley Mall in San Diego, CA. The optional fast charging system will enable the BMW i3 driver to charge their EV from a standard 110 volt outlet with a cord set, a 220 volt charging wallbox or public charging station and also from a DC Fast Charging public charging station all from the same charging inlet. “The start of the public DC Combo Fast Charging Infrastructure installations in the US is a great base for the US launch of the new BMW i3, because it will offer our customers the ability to recharge their EV in less than 30 minutes instead of the three hours needed with conventional 220 volt public charging stations” said Cliff Fietzek, Manager Connected eMobility at BMW of North America. The Combo Charging System is a joint development between most OEMs and the EV industry. BMW and General Motors together tested several Combo Charging Stations from various suppliers both in Munich, Germany and Warren, Michigan. OEMs worked together with the EV industry to confirm a DC combo-charging standard. Major automakers including BMW, GM, Ford, Chrysler, Daimler, Volkswagen, Audi and Porsche have committed to adopting the combo fast charge connector standard. This installation of the first-ever public charging station to use the SAE standard DC Fast Charging Combo Charging System at the Fashion Valley Mall in San Diego, CA is another milestone for BMW on the road to the launch of the Born Electric BMW i3 in the US. The growing DC “Combo” public charging infrastructure in the US will be accessible for the all-electric BMW i3 when equipped with the DC Fast Charging option. Production has begun in Leipzig, Germany of the the BMW i3, which will be available in the US in the second quarter of 2014. |

History doesn't always provide a recipe for success in the future. BMW has and will continue to build cars that people want to drive - if they don't, they'll cease to exist.
As an enthusiast, you don't need to love this car...but you need to appreciate that this car and the BMWi sub-brand are creating scale for light-weight hybrid composites that will be leveraged by M and eventually, main-line BMWs. To that end - this is a BMW. Forward thinking, demand satisfying and to a certain type of driver (hyper-miller, perhaps) fun to drive. Bring on my CFRP-heavy M2. šŸ˜ƒ |

There should be a standard to car charging stations like micro USB for phone, which will be common to all EVs in future. This will make the car mfrs share the stations and promote the EV concept by sharing access.
It will eventually happen just like the phone charging. It's just a matter if time they realize it and make it happen sooner than later.

I'm thinking my next DD might end up being an EV. I love my f30 328, and will probably keep it for another 8 years or so. BMW should have sedan models available by then since Tesla is really pushing the industry and doing fairly well. I see almost 8-10 model s everyday going to work (commuting from PA to princeton NJ). But then... My track car will always be conventional gas vehicle. Tech changes everything.

How wide are those tires
Another object to own to worry about charging its battery, in addition to your cell phone, laptop, tablet etc.. I wonder if mophie will make an extended battery case for this thing..

The Model S has a 250 mile range because it has a 85kWh battery. For comparison my 110 mile range ActiveE has a 32kWh battery.

Don't forget, there is also motor braking (regen). Wait till you see the official braking figures. The i3 has one of the shortest stopping distances of any current BMW.

When you have aggressive brake energy recovery (i.e., the generator acts like a huge brake), the actual brake pads do not need to be particularly big. In effect, you have significant drivetrain braking and the brake pads to stop you. The actual brake pads in the thing should last for a VERY long time.
In one of the articles, it indicated that the DC fast charge capability is optional? Seems like it should be standard. While a typical residential power setup doesn't have the voltages required to make those work, it isn't as big an issue in commercial or public parking areas. It will be interesting to see the full option list for the i3 in the USA. Last edited by jadnashuanh; 10-01-2013 at 04:45 PM.. |
