Ridiculous comparison indeed. It's like comparing a beauty queen and a workhorse.
That's why I have both My track modded 911 gets beat to shit (don't even really wash it). But when I want to go out it's the i8 or my Aston.

Wow, tough crowd!
I thought it was interesting, in that obviously the i8 isn't a track car, even to the extent that that a fairly standard 911 is, yet it acquitted itself ok on the track and proved that it was adjustable on the throttle etc. Given that hardly anyone will take their i8 to a track, the comparison and relative lap times are rather pointless, but as a road car for most people (including me) the i8 ticks almost all the boxes, certainly more than my 997 GT3 did. |

But I think most can agree that the i8 is something of its own, outside of the norm for BMW (and every other manufacturer) and hopefully they can keep it up. |

i have lived with my i8 for the past few months. And with various 911s for the past 15-20 years.
911's are very competent cars but not exactly soothing in all situations. Even the softest 911s like regular c2's or turbo's are rock hard when compared to the i8. Tests like this fail to show the breadth of abilities of the i8. How good it is in the real world outside of a circuit. Where the vast majority of us spend 99.99% of our lives. |

And if I wanted a fast track car, there are lots of cars faster than the 911. Where the 911 wins by a mile is as a reliable daily use fast car, that is good on track, AND is inconspicuous enough to be parked and left anywhere. The i8 is more special though, by a long way. But it is in no way a track car. |

I don't agree. "Does more" needs to be defined. I choose to drive electric cars while ICE cars "do more." A Lotus Elise does much less than a Honda civic by your logic and costs more.
Those of us who prefer the i8 already have cars who "do more" or are not looking for what they do. There are hpwever, right now, no cars under $800k that do what the i8 does. I get that it is not for people who only measure cars by horsepower or features. Btw some of us don't give a lick about exclusivity. |

I find the cockpit of the Porsche cramped. And I've never liked the rear engine and weight distribution issues. Coupled with the fact that the styling is still stuck in the early 1970s, I'll pass.

I think that most people who drive i8 are older guys that have not too much clue about cars and they were fooled by BMW to purchase that piece of overpriced technology which can only compare with other electric city cars.
There is not a single thing that I like about this car. It is not even fuel efficient. My porky 2200kg X5 takes 2l more of gas city driving and I believe that on a circuit after i8 runs out of e-juice they would be equally fast And I could also buy i8 if I wanted... |

Hi Andy, seems like I am another fool falling for the i8... Well in fact, ordering my 2nd one now. After actually owning one. How silly can that be?

Anyone want to buy an i8, real cheap? I feel so old and dumb right now, I was going to take the i8 for one more slow electric spin up and down the driveway before my hip replacement, but the magic is gone... |

Anyone with good credit score can buy the i8 on a loan. You're obviously a "younger" guy that will need a lot of growing up to do. After 50 cars, including 15 Porsches, 2 lambos, 2 ferraris, bunch of race cars, M3's, Ariel Atom, I chose the i8 for reasons well beyond mileage deficiencies compared to your X5.
Don't focus on mileage. You're doing it wrong. I'm glad you don't like this car. And when you grow older and keep your ways, no one will like you either. Quote:

I think by the time your porky X5 (which I'm sure you paid a hefty sum) catches up to the i8 on the circuit, it would have rolled over

Gee, now that I think about it, I wonder if i8s just appeal to older guys with erectile dysfunction!! Think about it:
Open the car door and look at your i8 now! Are we just COMPENSATING?!? |
