Even if Tesla brings out the 3 late in the game BMW is going to be stuck with a $50000usd i3 and there will be 200 mile battery options by then, so many will no longer need to charge, that includes myself. Nissan will bring out its new Leaf based of the new design language ( Search Nissan Sway to see the direction ) by the end of next year. Infiniti will follow with the LE. And there are 1000 mile batteries made with water/aluminum/air in the wings. Soon there is going to be huge paradigm shift in the car Industry, I hope everybody is ready. |

There is no magic battery technology around the corner, there is just a "efficiency of scale" cost and some size reduction possible. There is no 1000 mile batteries coming around anytime soon. And electric cars are great for short distance commuters, but most people will not lock themselves in as their only car. And I think the solution a lot of major car makers are converging on, providing 30-40 miles miles as plug-in and then a hybrid setup is perfect answers for a lot of people. In the city and short commutes they will be electric only, but then fire up and go if they need. And btw i8 was "born" exactly to be what it is, very balanced between the two technologies. IMHO i3 is nothing more than a more upscale Leaf, and for me its not worth it. |

Yup. I'll believe it when I see it. Lots of "visionaries" I see here.
In the meantime, I'll thoroughly enjoy my i8!

The Tesla weighs what an SUV does. The car is dragging its 7000 (yes, 7000) laptop-size batteries around in a last century chassis. The interior of the S is laughable. The exterior is so bland as to be generically ugly. The car and its components are not made in a sustainable factory or a sustainable way. Carbon fiber? The Tesla has never heard of it. BMW, on the other hand, sustainably builds their i cars and invented a new carbon fiber manufacturing system.
Musk is a financial guy. His vision was PayPal (a sleazy company if there ever was one). Cars? Not in my lifetime.

It's not only happening. It's right around the corner and further more there will be 200 mile battery options within 18 months. 1000 mile batteries are coming too, check Google for that too. EV's will be more mainstream in just a few years. As far as the Born Electric Slogan, it's the worst part of the BMWi Car Line, as only the i3 BEV is truly Born Electric. BMW needs to fire that marketing firm. Completely confuses the public. Like the name Volt does. |

EVs based on batteries will hopefully become part of the mix of new and interesting cars coming down the line. But if you really want electric cars to dominate you need to get away from the 700+ pounds of batteries (as others are pointing out). I am afraid Tesla is putting too much of its eggs in the battery basket, because its the only "IP" they have. I am not sure why you are so vested in the cult-like defense of Tesla. |

I wonder how the haters would respond to people hatin' on their cars. Bet they'd get pissed off. Funny though, I only feel pity...

I dont understand why so much hate from car guys. I love Tesla. p 85 s was one choice and a Porsche 991 turbo s was the other. I took the car in the middle. I think I am getting a little more exotic car for the same money. I wish Tesla all the best and if Porsche comes out in2 years with the PTTS or 991 Turbo S hybrid I will jump ship again. I think in Battery technology Tesla is ahead of all other car manufacturers.

I made the HUGE mistake of posting some information on a Tesla board about i8, and wow. I think its more a kind of brain washing by Tesla fans who have to claim it to be the greatest thing ever (tm) and no fault can be found or you don't get it. |

This is not correct. The "Born Electric" tag means that the cars were designed from the start with and for electric motors. This marketing language is to distinguish the i brand from the large majority of other electric/hybrid vehicles which incorporate electric motors into an already-existing ICE platform.
Along with that BMW promotes the fact that the cars can operate solely on electric power. |

How about... Born Electric with a gas tank and a small petrol motor. Your not born electric when you have a gas tank anywhere. |

In reaction to ...
Hi Guys, I'm a newby on this forum. A friend of mine indicated me that there was a thread about my car. The thread gave me the feeling that the moderaters don't feel the need to stick to the topic as it's now more of a discussion about electric, hybrid or combustion engines that will rule the world or are the solution .....
Aren't you all car lovers or petrolheads who discuss there admiration about specially BMW but also cars in general on this forum ? Anyway, in reaction to all what's said about the dragrace that started this thread: No, the I8 has no engine tuning Yes, it's 2 centimeter lowered by Manhart Racing Yes, the wheels are Manhart Racing Yes, I won at this short track but wouldn't on the 1/4 mile to none of the components, simply the electric torc and 4 wheel drive that gives the advantage over the two wheel driven cars from a stand still. No, the I8 is not a supercar, it simply has not enough horsepower. The car itself would be able to handle more horsepower as it handels superb on the track. Yes, the I8 has the looks of a supercar and draws a lot of attention on the road Yes, we love to drag against each other and see how our cars perform, we are all friends and take the opportunity to make fun, always with respect for our cars and ourselfes. For me .... I bought the I8 because of it's futuristic approach as hybrid and styling. The mat white wrap does the shape of the car good. I enjoy driving it despite off the lack of engine noise and it's emotionless driving characteristics. I'm not gonna try to convince anybody based on my emotions or motivation but it's a real privilege to drive this car every now and then. If and when BMW brings out a stronger version it will sure be on my bucket list |
