Agreed. But when that moves to how much money I make a year, now it's too personal.

I said sure? She touched the car and said a prayer. She then hugged me. This was all in front of a liquor store. That was the weirdest moment so far...
Best hope it wasn't a voodoo curse in disguise. I've become weary of girls in front of liquor stores ...
Lol hahaha right.
I don't want anyone that I do not know touching my car and praying. No thank you.

I personally feel rather uncomfortable even when they start asking about how much it costs. Somehow I feel like a prick having to talk about how much money I am willing to spend on a car.

I'd rather have ppl ask about the hybrid system, chassis, doors, etc

Similar feelings here. But I think it shows you what people are really thinking about when they are "interested": money.

In a day when everyone has the internet, they can look up the cost themselves. No need to put us on the spot with a question like that.

I agree....I'm more than happy to discuss the technical aspects of the car, etc. No big deal. In fact, I love to talk about ANY car. Just, please keep it non-personal.

"How much did it cost?"

"I don't know. It was a gift."

"Who gave it to you?"

"Sorry, I can't say."

"Who are you?"

"I'm the guy with the i8."

If they don't get the hint, they are too stoopid to look it up on the Interwebz.

Maybe it is different in the UK compared with USA, but here with various "special cars" including the i8, the only financial question I've ever been asked is how much the car costs.

Other than that, people stopping to chat have always been friendly, positive and interested in my car. I do often get the usual questions about top speed, engine size and bhp. Those questions are universal whatever the (special) car though.

I can't recall a single negative/unfriendly encounter though, in 20 years of such cars.

Same here - all encounters have been friendly. I haven't had anyone ask about my income, and as I recall I don't think anyone has asked about price. Most people that want to engage in discussion know it's some sort of electric car and are more interested in range, horsepower, does it use gas also, etc.

All positive experiences here, most people just want to know about the car. Most are astonished when I tell them I average around 65 miles per gallon, with nightly charging.
I'm humble and earn a modest income by many standards, so I reminded them that I just lease it, it's not really mine. They usually respond with something like: But you're driving it, well done!

It is different in Old Blighty. Married to a Brit and living part time in Sherbourne, Dorset for many years, I can attest that the English are very polite while Americans have essentially no appreciation of propriety. Car culture in America is sadly too often the province of Yabbos and Wideboys.
