mirrortap valentine 1 radar detector to i8?

anyone here use the mirrortap wires (instead of hardwiring) for their radar detectors (specifically v1)? ive been using mirrortap for years both on my gtr and lexus isf... as long as there was wires behind the rearview mirror, the mirrortap should fit in with a black and a red wire.... i havent looked specifically for any electricals behind our rearviews..

Interested to learn more. I transferred the v1 obd and Bluetooth setup from my 991 to the i8 only to learn it isn't really compatible. If I want to lock the i8 I have to unplug the v1 from the obd or the car alarm sounds. Annoying.

wow sounds like a lot of work...all the mirrortap really is just one wire..one end has two flat prongs that plug in your rearview mirror and the other end is the phone jack looking plug.

Any idea where the fusebox is? I've always just tapped from the fuse box.

I'm using a 9500ci, it's fully integrated and so sleek it looks almost OEM. I think my installer hard wired it to the mirror but I could be wrong.

My i8's Valentine One gets its power using a Mirrortap. No problems. Can't help you on the wires; the dealer did it for me.

I'm in the UK

I bought a blend mount from the states which I had to mod for right hand drive.

My video/audio specialist who wired my blackvue said he did not recommend the mirror tap and said it should be wired from the fuse box.

Don't know his justification for this?

i got the mirrortap working by splitting the center piece open above the rearview mirror and plugged it directly to the power above there. works perfect

has anyone actually installed a mirror tap themselves on here? i found out that my radar detector stays on even when i lock the car...i plugged the mirror taps into the burgundy/purple power plug instead of the main plug since my prongs werent long enough for the main plug....

I really wouldn't mess with the electrics on a car like this myself. A lot of the wiring doesn't just transport current, it's also computer-monitored for load to identify electrical faults. Plus, you don't know what's protected with what sort of fuse. Tapping into a random cable can upset all kinds of things. That's probabaly why the recommendation is to tale power from the fuse box - ideally from a spare port.

yea i see what youre saying. normally tapping into the mirror directly is fine since that only controls the garage buttons and usually mirror auto dimming. i just tapped into the small one next to it which seems like its constant power. so far everything is ok for a couple days. just need to turn it off when im not in the car.

Mighty - what did you have to do to mod the blendmount for RHD?

Sorry I'm not on the forum much.

The parts have to be reversed in their orientation, which is easy as it all screws together but there is a part that pops into the ball mount behind the mirror.

In a LHD this pops into the ball mount facing away from the car. When reversed this faces towards the car and snags on the back of the mirror. I took an angle grinder, shaved this off, filed smooth and touched up with Matt black paint.

It looks stock now and is very secure but I did pad out with extra stickers to tighten up. I have a sneaking suspicion that the effected part is more about preventing interchangeability between cars than actual support.

Great product
