M4 to I8

The lease was up on my M4 Convertable, thought about a 2019 Vet but ended up with a 2016 I8. Not sorry one bit. Also handles better than the M4.

I just came from an M5 and I couldn’t be happier. I can’t get over what a technological marvel and total package this car is. It’s also just plain fun to drive.

I dont know if you guys knew this but all the suspension on the i8 was designed and has the M logo everywhere.. so its going to handle great if not better than some M cars...

But Yeah I had the M4 and I didnt miss the car after a couple of days..

I can confirm I did see the M badges on suspension components, when at the factory.

I can see them on mine - I took some pictures of the wider front tyres, M logos everywhere.

Some of the i8 tech will end up in M cars so I would expect them to be very involved in the i8's development and at the same time helping with older features for the i8 such as suspension.

My 2 Cents

I never had an M4 since I went from E92 M3 to i8. I miss the M3, but love the i8.

Very different cars and in my perfect garage I'd have both. The i8 is quicker off the line with a tighter chassis, although lighter (not less direct) steering and less good at the very limit. E92 M3 has a roaring V8, although somewhat slower off the mark, but makes you work the torque at the higher rev range and seemed tighter at the limit -- despite its porkier bulk.

Strangely - the i8 is far more comfortable on long distance driving in comfort mode. I've often considered it more of a GT than outright performance car; whereas -- even with EDC in comfort setting and those comfortable seats with lumbar support etc. -- the M3 did my back in after more than a few hours in the cockpit. The M3 takes more luggage, with proper 3 series boot, and flies under the radar these days, whereas the i8 makes An Entrance.

Different cars, different strokes. Love both for their different strengths. I imagine the M4 is the same.

At the end of the day, though, I'm not trading in my i8 for another E92 M3, so there's an implicit choice between the two.

I had an E92 M3 before my F10 M5 and the main reason that I got rid of the M3 was the stiff ride. The M3’s softest setting was harsher than the M5’s firmest setting. I also wanted more power . I am very pleased with the i8’s suspension. Comfort is just that and sport is firm but acceptable except on bad roads. I don’t know if it’s my imagination but sport seems more compliant on the freeway than around town. You’re right about it being a GT car and that’s just the way I like it.

Put some 245 on the front, that makes the steering a little heavier, I like it.
