i4 underwhelming? IONIQ 5 more innovative, Tesla looks bloody good value
Hello people,
Like many of you I was looking forward to the i4, but I have to say now that we have specs and prices (in the UK) released, I'm feeling underwhelmed. Frankly the Hundai IONIQ 5 looks super innovative, appealing and has about the same specs as the I4 eDrive40 (I understand they 'drive' differently) and the Tesla Model 3 long range looks very appealing too especially thanks to the charger network. Bothe the Tesla and the Hundai look much better value too. I get that the BMW will be much more fun to drive but I was expecting better performance/range/price. I guess afterall the i4 isn't a dedicated EV platfrom llike the other two. Can imagine how much it'll cost with some options thrown in. Not much reason to replace my current 330e F30. Thoughts are welcome... |

Have you driven the Tesla yet?
Drove one, great car but wouldn't class it as luxury, they take short cuts. For example the self drive, they don't put a sensor in the steering wheel, so it keeps asking you to tug the steering to prove you are still there. The sound deadening wasn't great, felt my A4 with acoustic glass and ice engine was quieter on the motorway. And the lack of drivers display or heads up. As long as the i4 meets the currents BMW standards then it will be better then the Tesla. For sure there has always been cars that offer more spec for less money, but implementation is important to me, and BMW normally get that right |

Which features did you think were innovative on the Ioniq 5?
Apart from the better use of space, the rest seems pretty std tech, would be interesting to see the reviews when they come out in the UK. It supposed to be softer than a model Y, which I think will translate to more of a boat 🤣 |

Tesla is not a good value to me at all, showing up as worst in industry for quality on a recent owner-based large-sample survey....doesn't matter what the specs are if that is what is coming out of the plant.
As nicely done as the Ioniq5 seems to be, it's a half-foot shorter than the i4, so too small for us to consider. The i4 is already 1.5" shorter than my 3 GT and my bike just fits in that one.

I know the weather conditions weren't the best, but check out this video about the consumption of the Ioniq 5 on the highway at 130 km/h (80 mph).
That is not innovative. 205 km (127 miles) with a battery usage from 98% soc to 6% soc. (WLTP is 432 km or 267 miles) So much for the topic of "Advantages of a dedicated ev platform" |

I hope the i4 can pull of some good highway consumption at regular speed, or at least so i can avoid the thing that is with the i3s that i daily drive right now, where it drops from 314-320 km 100% full charge to 250 km 96% charge when arriving at work, that particular stretch on the highway has a small stretch that is 100 km/h and the rest is 80 km/h. And note the trip to work is only 13,7 km long so its a drop with nearly 70 km for 13,7 km driven that is not a good range estimate so to speak.
That type of range estimates are way to unreliable and i hope the i4 can combat some of that guess o meter stuff. So for example when going on a road trip that is 340 km long and the car has an estimate of 500 km then drops 200-300 km range after a 20 min drive that wont bode well, people want reliable range estimates and not a guess o meter as it is now with the i3. If EVs are to succeed this is gonna be a major hurdle to fix. It can't be hopidty hopp all over the place so you don't know what the actual range is gonna be.

800v for example.
I won't make any judgement until they put i4 and Model 3 under similar situation and see how they perform. |

I am underwhelmed. Had such high hopes with the concept and the 85% carry over of what we saw to production and $50K starting price. Not even close to the 85% as promised and a $6k price bump over the $50K mark.
Not saying it's a bad car, so if you like it ....buy it. (although I'd highly recommend a lease if you look at residual values .....look at what used i3's are selling for). Not sure how invested BMW is to EV's going forward, The i3 and the Mini SE and pretty poor compared to others. At least the Mini is priced low (unless you want the nicer amenities..then you start to push the $40K mark) and you get less the 150 miles in range @ no extra charge. Yeah, I'd be looking at Hyundai, KIA, Genesis, Bolt and others for an EV. I am not a troll, I own a M240i and a Mini S..so I am in the BMW camp. Not sure whether I will be going forward in the EV world. Last edited by USA-RET; 06-11-2021 at 08:44 AM.. |

I also think the Ioniq5 looks fantastic but there are now PCP calculator figures for it and well….hmmm.
The top launch model is £12,500 deposit and £480month.

Value is derived from what you get for what you pay. BMW normally offers things you simply can't get at the same price point from other manufacturers. Not just tech specs, but the luxury as well. The problem with the i4 is that when you compare it to something like the polestar 2, which is a natural competitor, the edrive40 model is significantly slower with less power and without AWS, but better range, but more expensive comparably equipped. It'll be interesting to see how the i4 edrive40 compares to the audi Q4 etron, that's a similar level of luxary, although you can get a preview of the powertrain with the id.4 |

One of the more important aspects of an EV is what charging network access is included and to what charging prices.
All requires payment for the electricity nowadays. Tesla has its supercharger access included. BMW has bmw charging which includes ionity (in europe) access and reasoably priced but only free for the first year. Hyundai, don't know. |

One more thing.
The Hyundai seems to be a small hatch while Tesla model 3 and BMW i4 are sedans. If you have a 3GT where you load you bike into it, none of these would be able to do that. For an EV you probably need to look at VW ID4 or Skoda Enyaq iV. |

i4 length = 188.4" 3 Series GT length = 190" Actual proportional differences for i4 to Ioniq5 are likely about 3" in front and 3" in back. We don't yet know how much of that is the depth/plan view wrap of the fascias versus the size of the actual body and interior. A more useful dimensional comparison for the interior space would be base of A-pillar to rear of cargo compartment. Both are 4 door hatchbacks and BMW refers to the body as a Grand Coupe. I find Tesla irrelevant due to quality. I would stay with ICE before ever considering a Tesla.

3GT with seats folded has 1,600 L (56.8 cu ft) cargo space. Ioniq 5 with seats folded has a 1,587 L (56 cu ft) cargo space, despite being 7.5" shorter. I guess this demonstrates the advantage of a dedicated skateboard EV platform. |

At least in europe, every other brand charges a monthly fee plus pay per use for ionity access. Sure, for some it may be included for one year. But year 2+, you'll pay aproximately $20 per month to be able to pay per use at reasonable prices. Unless you get a brand where it's not offered and then you'll pay ~$1 per kWh (which means more expensive to use than gasoline which is ~$2 per liter). |

BMW is in a class of its own given its driving dynamics, design ethos, and build quality/overall solidity.
If you are more concerned with "value" or charging network and don't care for the above qualities then maybe BMW, a brand that produces more driver-oriented cars, is not for you.
