I don't think the 8 speed was in use by the time most of the tech was solidified for this model. Perhaps the LCI will get the 8 speed like a lot of recent models.
Makes sense with all the programming that went in to make seamless the harmony between the electric motor and the petrol motor that the engineers stuck with the original rather than switching it up and redoing everything for the new gearbox. Think of it this way. New tech comes out all the time. We see it always, a new 6er, 7er, 5-series is released, just months after some other newer model but with lesser tech. Lots of threads access the board with nav versions, etc., where this happens. If the engineers were to always make a new release have the latest tech, we'd never get a release of anything. Happens in software all the time. At some point of development of a new product, the tech available is solidified and anything newer won't make the cut simply due to product delivery timelines. |

BMW has been known to make their claims underwhelming with HP numbers and then the real world numbers ended up being higher. If that trend is an indication, I would expect same or better than claimed range from the BMW i brand.

Exactly. When the mags get these as long term testers. Then we will see a true review of the car. A simple one day performance test will not tell us much.

The previous car I owned (not BMW) was supposed to be 23-28 but I constantly got 31 on 90% freeway driving. My current BMW is 18-28, I average ~22-23 but I drive less on the freeway nowadays. Even when I used to do 90% freeway driving, I used to get something like 25. Can hybrid car owners explain what realistic MPG to expect on a i8 if you drive on hybrid mode (engine and battery on at all times)? It says you can get up to 95 MPG but range is only 310 miles which is about the same as my 1er. Not sure what the tank capacity is either |

From csaba @ C&D....I don't think this is that crazy
10. An Mi8 Is Not as Farfetched as It Sounds Although no M version of the i8 has been announced or even suggested, it would not be difficult to create one. The 168-hp electric motor from the i3 could be easily fitted—with uprated electronics and a higher-capacity battery. Similarly, there looks to be room for the four-cylinder version of the i8’s turbo triple. A proportional increase would raise its output to 304 horsepower, bringing this theoretical Mi8’s total output to 472 with perhaps 500 lb-ft of torque. Even with a modest weight increase, this increased thrust—coupled to larger, stickier tires and a suitably modified suspension—could easily produce the first hybrid M car. Now that sounds like some fun...

I love it... to me the price doesn't matter, I can't afford it. I want the seats and steering wheel to put in my F30! The interior is sick!

I really like it. Do you guys really thing it is way to expensive? I would rather pick the i8 over a bunch of different cars in the same price range. I have a friend who might be interested, he bought a brand new Maserati Granturismo MC last year and today he told me that he wants to trade it.

Clearly not for the older men.
BUT arent they the ones who can really afford these kinda cars according to the recent survey on potential i8 buyers?

looking forward to a comparison test between the i8 and the NSX when it comes out since these two are the most similar with each other in the current market(excluding 918, la ferrari, P1, Model S). i think similar pricing as well, $110k+ for the NSX according to C&D.

BMW has lost its vision in trying to revolutionize it. It is the new Audi/Lexus of the car market. No, angel eyes that have been the classic design element of every single BMW for more then a decade. To just put any design of LED DRL is lame. The concept of this car is good. Yet the price is outrageous. Put an Audi badge on it and no one can tell if it is a BMW. Quote:

Front looks good but needs different headlights. Side profile is good but the rear is just plain ugly. Performance wise this feels more like an i2/i4. Needs a v6 version of the b38 or at the very least, have M build an S20 for this car. Unfortunately, the target was MPG and performance suffered for it. What they should have done was named this an i6 and built the i8 as an M4/M6 performance wise car with an electric motor for stop and go traffic.
