So, crawled under my car this morning, in my USA spec 2015 i8 there is definitely the speaker in place of the left exhaust outlet. Can't get a picture of the part numbers, but it looks like the snail shaped turbo-like thing in the pictures for Active Sound for the outer speaker.
Left: Right: More excited about this mod since I know it will not just change the interior noise level.... |

Ever so slightly annoying that the BMW flagship technology showcase doesn't do this kind of thing by default with software options to choose your sound.
Like the interior lighting that is only blue/orange/white when the thing is capable of basically infinite colours. Wish they'd just add a "complicated" menu option to unlock this kind of thing for people who want to play around.

I hope to see more youtube videos of the exhaust speaker as posted above. But perhaps in less traffic so we can make out the sound better....and less cheesy music on top.
The idle growl seems to be nice, but a flyby video from the outside would be good to hear also so we can review properly. edit: just realized this is not a special product for i8 and is open to other models also Last edited by rainman54; 12-22-2016 at 02:20 PM.. |

the i8 already has the speaker and the electronic hardware for it, on other bmws you have to install the speaker(s) as well...it involves cutting, splicing, a little coding in the ecu, not trully a bolt on

Because of the 3 cyl engine any aftermarket "real" exhaust will sound like crap (there are plenty of examples), so tweaking the "speaker" is the only thing you can do and it actually sounds very good. Not to mention costs (any exhaust for the i8 comes to 2500-3000 easy plus labor), reversability, posibility to link it to the car modes (maybe you don't want the insane noise all the time), warranty and easy installation. if you want a true real vicious v8 or v10 sound , you know what to do , go buy one we will try to install a second "speaker" in spring, just like the Maserati Ghibli setup, maybe that will take care of the high rev range, but it will not be an easy task.... What I'd really like to see is the M5 V10 dropped into an i8, just for shits and giggles - that lightweight chassis with a monster in it would be.....interesting. Very much doubt there'd be any way to mount it even using the back seats and boot/trunk area.

I reached out to Maxhaus to find out what pieces would be needed for the conversion, hopefully somebody over there speaks English! I have not taken German since college...

In the video posted above it seems like it goes quiet in e-drive - not sure if you can manually over ride that?
Didn't know that the Ghibli has speakers also. Someone should try putting Ferrari F1 sounds haha, sky is the limit! |

I was told by the gentleman doing the coding on my car that this was something he could change as well. He said he could change the i8 sound booster to any M vehicle. I didn't get mine changed as I currently like how it sounds but he did say he can change it to sound like an m4 or even a m6. I know this module may or may not sound better but just sharing some knowledge.

You need another sound ecu to amplify the sound (basically an amplifier), the bmw one is simply not powerfull enough.
We use the Maserati one. We are doing another install today, here is the full kit for the i8 Last edited by ElSpa; 12-27-2016 at 05:47 AM.. |
