Loving this car. Can't wait to see it without the swirlies and what colors it comes in.
BTW for all of those guys hoping it's under $100k, there's no way. A BMW executive confirmed earlier that it would be more than 100,000 euro, which is for sure gonna mean a > $100k USD price tag. |

I'm a bit surprised to see all of the complaining that is going on.
The car is gorgeous, even with the camoflage. The performance numbers are actually pretty good and the car is mind-blowingly efficient with fuel especially when you consider the performance potential. Consider this car's competition, the Porsche 911, Audi R8 (V8), etc. These cars perform similarly but the BMW does it while getting much better gas mileage and (my opinion) while looking better. A remark was made about 3300 lbs being too heavy. Seriously? The car has a gasoline engine AND an electric motor WITH batteries AND 4 seats! 3300 lbs actually undercuts the M3 which comes in around 3400-3500 lbs with a few options on it. Skinny tires? That doesn't always equal bad performance. Ever driven Hondas of old? Those cars didn't have a problem handling well on skinny tires. Why would a BMW? If you still can't stand it, then don't buy it, don't bother following it. As an enthusiast, I think this is all very exciting to see. The Porsche 918 and the McLaren P1 are showing us that hybrid supercars can be economical while providing performance that may as well bend the laws of physics (exaggeration of course, but the P1 is FAST). BMW is showing us that we can get performance that is far cheaper than those cars and still exceeds what most of us would ever need or use on public roads. I can't wait to see how this gets applied to more "everyday" type cars that are more attainable. This is a GOOD thing. The performance is respectable, the technology is great, and it's very economical. Oil is a resource of which there is a finite supply. Cars powered predominantly or entirely by gasoline simply aren't sustainable. This car isn't the answer, but it's the next step so we can use a finite resource more efficiently. BMW is thankfully showing us how we can use this diminishing resource and still have FUN (unlike the Prius). I will always enjoy the sound that a true gasoline-powered engine makes, but there are solutions out there that can help with this even if it is artificial.

When the concept first came out, I thought it was going to be over $300k or even close to $500k if they ever made it - another unobtainable halo car like the Vision SLR (which I still drool over to this day, but who doesn't right?). So it being anywhere near $150k base, I think is amazing. |

Specs look good for the most part
Two things I'm concerned about : Electric Range is very low. I'd love to see the figures on how this Electric range varies when taking into account factors like City VS Highway driving. Tire size : Clearly the width is designed to reduce air resistance and I'm sure contributes to the drag coefficient of .26 . However on a near 3300lb car with 20" wheels I have a feeling that this will undermine the handling of the car. I feel a lot of customers are going to want to upgrade to wider rubber, however can the wheel wells accommodate it? We shall see. |

On paper the car as a whole is at least on pair with Tesla considering construction materials, weight, aerodynamic design which is groundbreaking but mainly considering production processes and how efficient those are resource wise.

Question is how long do you have the full performance stats, gas and electric combined.
I would like to see how many laps the stig can drive all out around the Top Gear track, before it is just a 1.5L powered $100,000+ car. Last edited by hellrotm; 08-07-2013 at 11:27 AM.. |

The i8 is gorgeous but wish the specs weren't so vanilla. The tesla model S has awsome range, performance and the luxury and tech inside are incredible and set it well apart from any car currently out. IMO from what its showing so far i doubt the i8 will beat it in any category besides styling
The i8 is what it is though, a showcase much like the LF-A. technological experience that isn't ground breaking in specs but instead in design and build. Its kinda of like a skeleton watch of sort, tells time like other watches but in a way that it will make the wearer appreciate the craftsman. All things considered i think its a bit of a three base hit rather than a home-run. Hope BMW continues to stylize the I-series but pushes the envelope with the tech. |

I feel like everyone is misunderstanding this car. Sure for $100,000 the performance youre getting isnt amazing and I am sure you can get a lot of other cars ie f10 m5. Does 4.5s 0-60 seem accurate? Thats about the same 0-60s e46 m3's run and this car is a bit lighter has 30 more horsepower and 151 more ft-lbs of torque that is available at 1rpm so I can see those 0-60's being a bit pessimistic. But aside from performance this car shows bmw's technology at its finest with its laser headlights and its crazy computer that can make you reservations at a restaurant. For over $100,000 this car is an amazing value for the price

there's no sense in comparing the i8 to Tesla S as cars because they are two very different products. Anyway they can be compared as engineering achievements. In this respect I think the i8 is well ahead, taken as a whole of course and not just in what the power train can (can't) do or what are range or handling like. You need to take into account all the aero and carbon stuff as well. And there's laser lights too, the next step from the LEDs!

More like 2 + 2. Like in a 911, TT or Supra.

We need to follow this thread to see what changes (if any,) will be made and to monitor the development of the car. Yes, the skinny tires help reduce the drag coefficient, but it does affect performance in EVERY aspect. Put some 328i tires (225/50-17) on a M3 (265/35-19) and take it around the track. All this technology to make this car lighter has gotten it 100-200lbs less than an E92? Common, that's nearly M3 weight, once you sit in it. I agree with one thing, "This car isn't the answer, but it's the next step so we can use a finite resource more efficiently. BMW is thankfully showing us how we can use this diminishing resource and still have FUN (unlike the Prius)." As an enthusiast, I think this will be something interesting to follow.
