btw, has anyone else also put their name down for the i9? I did, a couple of weeks ago
I did a couple of weeks ago also, with nominal deposit, first at dealer. They seemed to acknowledge the certainty of the model or more powerful i8 variant for early 2016.
Pass along anything you learn in Europe of this development.

I only know that i9 is probably going to have:
  • more extreme styling, but based on i8
  • bigger combustion engine, probably 6 cylinder and turbocharged
  • bigger electric motor
  • significantly quicker than i8

I am top of the list at my dealer, and at least near the very top of the UK overall list.

If I learn more, I will share it. But I am sure any news will leak online instantly anyway

*Significantly more expensive

I've heard anywhere from $250-400k, think LFA money, that puts it out of my price range so I'll stick with the i8 for now. I'm sure it will be well sorted but they've only got a quarter of the time they had to design, develop, and produce the i8 so saying the i9 is going to be rushed might be an understatement (approved a few weeks back, debut the end of next year...and the fact that they abandon their naming conventions whenever it is convenient (i9 should be a sedan) trigger something OCD in me.

Also, the design might be more conventional since it's going be their 100th anniversary car and have cues from the past through the lens of the future (and they will need to balance reducing lift for performance and reducing drag for economy) but we'll see...probably a closer interpretation of the M1 Hommage.

Thanks for the original post, very helpful in my own deliberations - mine's coming in April, I'm told.

I ordered mine after a brief test-drive in July/August, but borrowed my dealer's demo car yesterday & kept it overnight. A few observations I had, in no particular order:
  1. Very thick A-pillars (due to the design of the doors I guess) mean you can lose whole cars behind them at roundabouts. I had a (not very) near miss at one.
  2. Rear windscreen glass is rippled (on my car anyway, maybe due to the shallow rake of it) so cars behind look distorted. It also takes a while to clear with the demister.
  3. My wife is slightly-built & found it hard to pull the door closed.
  4. I tried to turn on auto high-beam assist like in my old E92 M3, by just flicking the headlight stalk away from me, and cursed when nothing happened, what an ommission for a cutting-edge car! Then this morning I saw the switch on the end of the stalk to turn it on. Oops.
  5. I did miss the Active Cruise Control in my i3 though. I know it's not really that kind of commuter/city car, but they will get used as only cars too I'm sure, so driving in traffic or packed motorways will be part of everday life, and it's a fantastic option to have. It must have a "seeing eye" I presume, to have the anti-collision warning - maybe they'll add ACC in the new model year, or maybe it's already there & they just need to turn it on with a software update. Maybe.
  6. Talking of which, the anti-collision warning seems a bit hyperactive even on a low setting, and I don't drive very close to the car in front, honest!
  7. I got 30mpg driving at the sort of brisk pace where I would expect to get c18mpg from the M3 or my current GT3.
  8. It was cool to cruise past 2 horses in electric only mode, to save any scares.
  9. The cupholder won't take an iPhone 6+ like the one in my i3 will (edit: yes it will, my mistake. My phone had a cover on) - almost a dealbreaker! Bit of a lack of storage all round really.
  10. I liked that I could change the colour of the lit-up stripes on the dash & doors from blue to red to white. The ones on the dash reflect in the windscreen, but you can turn them off.
  11. The seats don't adjust much. Back & forth, backrest up or down, that's it as far as I could see. No lumbar adjustment and no bolster adjustment, and crucially they're a bit too high-set for my liking. In fact, you're at eye-level with people in saloons & hatches, when I expected to be set much lower-down. That aside, I thought they were uncomfortable at first but I'd forgotten about them by this morning so they can't be too bad. I don't think I saw any memory buttons.
  12. The doors are real crowd-pleasers, but they obviously need room to open fully, or you're stuck. With conventional doors, you can open them a crack & squeeze out of a tight gap if needs be, but last night in a public car park, I had to choose a wide space carefully. Even then I had only 3 inches' clearance (with doors open) to another car on one side, and half an inch to a rubbish bin on the other.
  13. The side windows don't go down all the way, there's an inch or two left sticking out, not good for posing with your arm on the sill.
As for the driving, I found the car a bit unexciting at first. Sure, it's fast, but I'm used to a bit more rawness in my GT3. Then again, I find that car is a bit too focussed most of the time, hence my looking at the i8 - but I did wonder at first if it was too much the other way. I needn't have worried: once I got onto some clearer roads & could put my foot down, it really came alive, and I was happy to confirm my order this morning when handing the car back. Try one, you'll love it!

That's it - a bit random, but maybe helpful to some.

Cheers!

ah, another UK based fellow future owner! I did write a post similar to yours not so long ago. I borrowed the i8 from bmw Parklane the weekend before last. Conclusions are pretty similar to yours.

The one thing i would add is that in London, people went mental for the i8. Never had a car that polarised people's attention.

Good review!

Hmm, I put my 6+ in the cup holder angled towards me and it acts as a pretty good "stand" only the bottom fourth/fifth of the phone goes in, I'm guessing you mean the whole thing doesn't go down into it.

Ah, to be fair, mine's got a case on it, but it looked like it wouldn't fit even without the case on. Guess I misjudged it!

Hi Eric - yes, I read yours too, thanks! Good write-up. It's an amazing piece of kit isn't it?

Thumbs down Update

I have avoided this site for a few months, and just logged back on today I felt that reading here regularly would make the wait for my i8 more unbearable.

Anyway, I just picked up my i3 a week ago, and was told by the dealer that my i8 is coming at the end of March. The bad news was that BMW intend to pass on a price increase to me!

Wait, what? Can they do that? Surely you've signed a contract like me, with the price fixed on it?

The wait is unbearable either way. I ordered mine a month ago and the website still says processing order. Then again the i concierge said it wont update till production estimated on march 11th for 2015 cars. I wish you the best in this crazy waiting period. Certainly better than the price increase news.

I did, but "Clause 5" in the small print allows them to increase the price as much as BMW wants.

It actually worked for me. I pretty much forgot all about the i8 for the last few months

Then when my i3 was ready for collection, that came as a bit of surprise (it was early), and I started thinking lots about the i8 again!

Talking

Starting in 15 minutes!

"Jeremy Clarkson tests the new BMW M4 at the track before switching to another BMW, the space-age, hybrid powered i8, for a revealing trip up the A1 to Whitby. When he gets there, and fuelled by a portion of fish and chips, Clarkson must decide which of the two he would rather take for the drive home."

Question Replacing Ferrari with i8?

From my second post in this thread, about selling the Ferrari.....well...

I was about advertise it for sale today, to make room for the i8....but couldn't bring myself to do it

So, the Ferrari stays, as does the Lotus. And the i8 joins them...along with the i3 I got last month!

I was just informed that my i8 is now built

It's currently "waiting to be cleared by product control".

It should be in the UK later this month

I too got my confirmation that the car has finished production and is awaiting assignment to its ship; asked my salesman to see if he could tell me which ship and he's looking into it; waiting is such a pain and I have no patience

You can put the VIN in the Cargo ID search

https://www.2wglobal.com/webapps?url...uickSearchPage

Mine showed up there a couple days before the dealer info updated.
