Here are the first spyshots and videos of the BMW i8, flagship of the new BMW i sub-brand, conducting cold weather testing. According to Scott26, it's undergoing drivetrain testing and some details on the car seen here will still be subject to change.

The i8 was previously intended to be powered by a 161-horsepower 1.5-liter 3-cylinder turbo DIESEL engine mated with a hybrid synchronous motor on the front axle (80HP) and full electric motor on the rear axle (51HP), to give a combined 292HP. But, according to R&D chief Klaus Draeger, the diesel motor will now be replaced by a traditional gasoline engine in order to appeal to the widest potential sales market.

Sales and price targets for the i8 are yet undetermined. According to Ian Robertson, BMW’s global sales and marketing boss, "Our sales will strongly depend on legislation. Not only by big markets like the U.S. or China, but by local city authorities and their terms of taxation," Robertson said. "If a city like Amsterdam or London decides that you get a tax reduction, then sales will boost."

The Vision Efficient Dynamics concept on which the i8 is based will be featured in the upcoming Mission Impossible 4: Ghost Protocol (where it's been spied on set), and two other projects.

Talk about looking "from the future", this car has it!

It's one thing to show it as a concept, or static, but when it's doing actual testing, it makes me think I'll see one on the streets in a few years. WOW!

The car's going to look so great in white. I suppose that this car will only be available in Singapore after 5 years or more. =(

Whatever they did over the rear wheels looks terrible. Front looks great... rear end is a fail IMO.

Lose the wheels and the retarded looking side mirrors. Why can't they be on the door like every other normal car. This isn't the Pagani Hahahaha.

Interesting vehicle, but it is probably going to cost a fortune. I wonder what the combined power will be with a petrol engine instead of the original diesel. BMW is obviously worried about resistance to diesel engines in the US.

I wonder if Diesel would also disqualify it from eco refunds in the US.

Now this is more like it--I looked at the i3 first and wasn't blown away...even with the psychadelic stuff on the sides, it looks hot.

Probably way out of my price range, but thumbs up regardless.

I still can't get over the fact it's no longer a diesel. It is now an entirely pointless object, as far as I'm concerned.

I've never wanted a car more in my life!

Its 2011, all cars should start looking all futuristic like this by now! Well done BMW for leading the way.

I don't think it will favor NYC roads being so low to the ground. esp now being pothole season.
