Odd heater event this morning with i8 roadster

Hi Guys,

Need some advice. This morning, I took the car out to the MoT station after weeks not using it. Always kept in garage on charger etc.

It was 0 degre Celsius to freezing basically.

The HVAC system took about 5-10 minutes to start operating. The cluster of the aircon system was actually on but no heating at all for a while. I fiddled around with the buttons and it eventually kicked off.

Strange thing, i thought the airco / heater was dead for a moment.

This is my 3rd i8 and this one is like brand new, 3k miles on the clock.

Just wondering if i am missing something?

Thanks in advance.

Well, a month or so after my initial post, I will answer my own question... It may help someone.

So my issue was the dreaded Auxiliary Heater that had failed. Again this is a late 2019 roadster with 3.1k miles on the clock.
I found out on a cold winter morning when the heater only kicked in 20 minutes inside the drive as the petrol engine came to temperature.

2nd issue I had with this car, previous one was the retractable roof failure which needed a new module.

As to the auxiliary heater that appears to be a well known issue, there was no explanation from the BMW dealership as to why it failed.

The cost was just over £1,300 and covered by the extended warranty.

I will renew the warranty for as long as i own this car.

That’s great you got it done through the warranty. My heater has done this too and will go through my warranty. It’s a 3rd party so will have to check if they will pay. Yes a warranty is crucial on these.

Mine was 3rd party too although i did not know it till the actual repair.

When i bought my car new and asked for an extended Warranty, the local BMW dealer gave me a warranty that belonged to their own franchise (Inchcape) as opposed to a pukka BMW one... Grrr.

Fortunately, they confirmed the cover. I still have to pay for the expense and now waiting for them to pay me back.
