This video makes me think of a question I've had concerning the i8's performance. I've read where the car has the same 0-60 times whether it is in all electric (e-drive) or a combination of electric and gas engine (i.e. sport mode). I realize the electric motor gives the instantaneous torque for quick starts off the line, but I would have thought the gas engine has to get the car to 60 mph faster in conjunction with the electric motor than the electric motor could do by itself. Any thoughts?

I believe the 0-60(km/h) on electric matches the 0-100(km/h) combined. The units are tripping people up.

Apples to apples:

0-37mph on electric =
0-60mph on electric/gas =
4.4sec (likely lower since the numbers they quote are usually for worst-case conditions)

As far as the sound goes, it sounds good and has a distinct character. The i8 keeps getting better the more I find out.

Hm

Sounds sick but why copy Aston Martin with this counter clockwise rev counter?

Whoever wrote that was likely confused.

Electric only 0-60 km/h (37.3 mph) is 4.5s
Combined 0-100 km/h (62.1 mph) is 4.4s

The car is much faster with both engines engaged.

Just did a bit of digging and the i3 is quicker than the i8 on the 0-60km/h time (37mph) -- does it in 3.7 seconds. That thing is zippy!

Didn't they install an ASD in a Prius for safety purposes?

Sound bites

I have a '67, side piped 427 Vette and '13 Maserati GT MC convt for noise. They are both fun and set off car alarms all along my routes. Yet, after a while, the blasting tones can get tiring. My i8 will be for other purposes.
Auto manufacturers have modified and amp'ed intake and exhaust tones for years, so this is nothing really new. Just a modern application of electronics and acoustics. To each his or her own.

Interested to see an independent comparison btw the i8 and the Tesla P85. I was expecting the i8 to be a lot quicker, but I am not sure anymore after this video. My neighbor has a Tesla and that is an amazing car. Gloves on BMW.

These systems make me afraid time when cars havenŽt got petrol engine under the hood. Only which has left is sound of the petrol engine.

Sounds great! The BMW i brand continues to grow on me and like a lot of "car guys" I think these electric cars are growing in appeal very quickly. It won't take long before I buy one. The Tesla already has me very intrigued - an affordable BMW electric car that doesn't look like a bread-box and has AWD would win me over.

Yup, I wouldn't pay a single penny if it doesn't have the ///M badge, I pay for the badges.

The idea and concept of Exterior Active Sound is wrong on so many levels.
Why make a car sound like something it is not?
Why not make it sound as a Spaceship? or a horse? or like a thunder?

I think Bmw has banned horse sound, reminds too much 19th century...not future. These another..not surprised at all if they become true some day.

Just replace the exterior pedestrian sound file with DJ air-horn sounds. Or install a train horn

Blah.... I will wait for ///M performance exterior and interior sound upgrade, this is too weak IMO. I will also wait for ///Marketing department to explain to me the intrinsic benefit of having V8 sound in an electric vehicle to enhance the ultimate driving pleasure, or whatever, too.

Spaceship? Nah, let's try ice-cream van music.

I love the car but I find this exterior active sound (surely a first) a little bit funny. Why not just let it sound the way it sounds. :

Anyway it would be fun to hack (code) the pedestrian warning sound to something other than a howling sound (whatever that means), something like, "Watch out!!!" but funnier.

I think this thread will be entertaining.

Edit: Sounds great in the video (from inside) with the active sound disabled. Would love to hear side-by-side comparison of the exterior sound with and without active sound.
I agree.

If we're to spend over 100k on something surely we shouldn't be embarrassed by it.

If you have to have a speaker to make it sound different kind of feels like there's some undertones of shame in having the set up, a bit like the car is a toy, or not as good as it should. Like the car is in denial somehow.

Just buy and be proud of the electric 3 cyl setup.

Would be an amazing Easter egg if BMW allowed remote change of sound, be a good way of avoiding arrears on finance or a cheated partner able to get their revenge.

Imagine the noises it could make it you missed a service interval
