BMW i3 purchase

Hi, long time bmw owner looking to trade in my f80 M3 for an i3.. have 55 mile one way commute, that’s 110 mile round trip.. Found a decent deal on 2017 left over with a nice rebate. Have reservations on range. Looking at the extended range version to help with range anxiety. Majority of my commute is 60-65mph with 16 miles at 75. Was wondering if I can make that commute on battery alone.

Thanks!

Are you able to charge while tending to work/business? Then also overnight at home?

If so I don't see it being an issue.

Especially with a coded rex model.

I've really grown to have some resentment to having to plug in so often. Seems like a chore now.

Currently there is a stop sale on all i3s. Dealers can't sell you a new or used one, until BMW finds a fix for a voluntary safety recall. Too bad for BMW with the $7500 tax credit being taking away in 2018. Seriously interesting if/when sales resume what BMW will do with their 2017 inventory and the restyled 2018s. Poor timing BMW!

I can’t take delivery, but I am told the software fix is on the way and will be able to pick up the car in the next week or two. Currently 2017 inventory has 5k rebate from bmw if purchased. Curious to see what real life range 2017 i3 owners are seeing.

Hello Romanon

I have driven a 2017 i3 Rex for the past 2+months. In the warm weather, I can get 130-140 miles of range on the battery if I use eco pro +. If you are going to drive 65-75 most of the time, I am practically sure you will not have the range to go 110 miles--unless you are speaking of the REX. Now that December is here, my range had dropped to 110 or so. I live in NE, but temps are still in the 40-60 deg F range.

Thanks, majority of my commute is 55-60 mph, with 16 miles on the highway moving 65-75. I am looking at the REX version, so range anxiety is not an issue. Good to know you were able to see 130 miles. That’s impressive. Certainly will give me enough range to get there and back.

I have the '14 model and traveling at sustained freeway speeds increases the burn rate ~20% faster than purely eco pro+ mode. Also more noticeable noise from the Rex at freeway speeds.

So the dealership is confident they will be able to start selling these cars again after just a software fix? I am looking to pull ahead into another i3 but no one that I have talked to has any idea of when the stop sale will be lifted.

Yeah as of Friday there was no new info about a fix. Hopefully OP has some inside info.

BMW Germany only knows what is going to be the fix.
If you are a driver who likes a great drive and great seats I wouldn't sign up to an i3s until you test drive it.

At first, I thought that no software fix is going to resolve a crash issue. However, what if the software did not let the car start unless driver seat belt was attached? That would fix the problem. Since the car is smart enough to know if your belt is not attached and it bongs, it could surely with a software patch, refuse to start the car and let it run.

Viola--fixed quickly. Over the air.

Hum---

All I know is what the sales rep is telling me. Software fix is supposed to be applied either this or next week. Certainly, if I can’t close this deal in December in order to take advantage of the tax incentive, I am waiting until my m3 lease is up which is another 12 months.

Curious how much % off msrp you are getting. I know in the past they were getting 12-15% off. The federal tax credit is good for next year. Recently I was quoted 44,980 for an msrp of 49,795. I think I can do better so I just want to check in and see what other people are getting now. And the sales are officially back on as of Friday last week.
