This is what happens when a marketing team builds a car.

"Emotion led visual...." Excuse me

Sorry, I think the car is a waste of resources.

BMW could have made something nicer, more available and better looking.

That could have used the money they wasted on their current line of cars and developed new chassis materials for them instead. How about a lighter car in the 1/3/5/6 series or any M car?

It's a waste. Sorry fanboys.

I can't help it but a comparison to the new Vette is interesting, value wise. I feel like the I8 has a wrong engine in it. This is a preliminary design. Kudos to structural and aero engineers. Horrible wheels and front lights.

Turbo s money

And anyone who can afford a P1 will not be looking at this car

Still a good car and a look into the future of
BmW...it's still a BMW and will help save on taxes

From a business case I don't see BMW making a halo car, they just say get an M
Or get a RR

I am almost certain this will be the basis for an 600-650hp M8/M10 supercar sometime around 2016, mark my words.

I hate "doors that go up." They are a pain in the ass.

But if you take into account the Federal Tax Credit of $7,500 and if you live in Calfornia, an extra $2500... that's $10K in savings already! Also, in California, you'll get an HOV sticker and FREE parking in certain counties.

And if you count all the gas $$ you save...it's even more worthwhile.

So realistically, it's about a $15-20K difference from the top of the line Tesla Model S.
Also, considering the fact that one cannot drive more than a couple of city blocks in San Francisco without seeing a Tesla, I would be surprised if the I8 did not sell well.

Individuals that can afford to spend upwards of $130,000 on a hybrid sport car are not looking for gas savings, tax credits, or rebates. They are simply making a statement.

6 speed auto?

1) Why not the world leading ZF 8 speeder of the F era? (Sport Automatic Transmission)

2) Is it the same old 6 speed slushbox of the E era?

Saving the environment is so much more than just fuel economy.

I don't get why people don't see this. Where do you think the electricity, that powers the car, is coming from? Do you think that electricity production is 'green' ? (yah, like 10% of it )

Second, the ecologic footprint of the industrial process of making this car is much larger than that of a small/simple car.

Anyone who will buy an I8 for environmental purposes, is just kidding himself.

If I had 6 figures to spend on a car, this would not be it. Far more better options at that price. In images 16 and 22, it looks like the roof/rear quarter body panel is peeling off. :-/

Interesting halo car and engineering exercise for BMW, but the i8 itself isn’t very usable nor any value. No trunk, so your putting whatever you are hauling in the back seat (note the golf clubs in the images), and it's massive sills, low seating position, and 'wing' doors are going to make ingress/egress a pain (literally).

You seriously think you will be saving the environment with these types of cars? Think again. BMW needs more buyers like you.

95 mpg?

22 miles on a charge?

Yeah helping just a little...I'd take this over the R8 for that reason alone.

Hmm, just realised from looking at some pictures of the side of the car with the door opened: seems it will be hard to get in and out of this car. Not suitable as DD?

- car sits pretty low
- roof is pretty low
- you must pass underneath the door
- you must "step" over the ridge (actually "throw your feet and ass over the ridge" would better describe it)

I wonder what journalists think of the road behavior. Pictures and figures is one thing, reality is another. (not being negative here, just saying that this is a first, and noone knows yet how it will drive)

It looks good, but the only thing this car really has going for it is that it allows the wealthy to make a (loud) statement... This car doesn't compete with anything available right now (perhaps the tesla conceptually, but they are priced very different and are different cars) so it will probably sell well to wealthy, self-righteous, know it all people....

It's neat, but has "I'm a snob" written all over it at the asking price. There's so many better options available at that price if buyers prefer not to make the i8 statement...

LOL. Again, MPG doesn not define "green." Ecological footprint is what defines if something is "green."

The electricity you use to power this cars is made from what ?
Well, 70% of electricy worldwide is made from coal, oil and gas.

Second, how much energy and natural resources (= biggest part of its ecological footprint) are used for the making of this car, compared to a small and simple car ?

But yeah, people who will buy an i8 over an R8, because "it is more ecological", are probably the target audience of this kind of car.

I bet you that no political environmentalist will ever be seen driving around in a i8.

From WIKI: "in the United States, electricity generation accounts for nearly 40% of emissions, the largest of any source"

Target customers like myself would also have their house "off the grid" and be using solar panels...(at least those were my thoughts).

In 6 years, once issues with this and the X5 plug in are ironed out, I see these two cars as the ultimate green garage (solar panels included).

I was joking.

But the "sporting" creds on this car comes up quite a bit short.. which leads me to conclude it's more of a halo, "look pretty" type of car. So.. hence a Neimann Marcus type of toy for somebody that really doesn't care other than making a statement.
