Lithium-Ion batteries are hitting physical limits
... but not in BMWs.
http://www.dw.com/en/batteries-are-h...its/a-19449790 For references, i3's batteries are still at relatively low density, at 95 W.hrs/kg vs. 140 - 210 for most Li-Ion batteries, or 260 for 'lithium polymer' battery. More info on batteries here: https://cleantechnica.com/2016/07/16...teries-better/ a

Too bad BMW just can't get any range out of it.

A manual transmission can be set to "comfort", "sport", and "track" modes simply by the technique and speed at which you shift it; it doesn't need "modes", modes are for manumatics that try to behave like a real 3-pedal manual transmission. If you can money-shift it, it's a manual transmission. "Yeah, but NO ONE puts an automatic trans shift knob on a manual transmission."

Interesting articles! I'm surprised that the focus is mostly on increasing capacity, and not optimizing rapid charging. I think a 150mile range would be widely accepted if the infrastructure would have a well placed grid of 'Super' Fast charging stations( ie 120kw/h +). If batteries could take higher loads, then charging would be a 10 minute pee break, which I think most people would accept.
The most frequent comment I get from Naysayers is "Well you have to hang out somewhere for an hour before driving on, that sucks" Doesn't bother me, but it's a reason not more EV's are out there. The perfect range and fast charge would have more people in EV's. |
