Used iX purchase advice

Long-time (gas) BMW owner, first time poster. I’ve done a lot of research on the car, tech, reading through this forum, and finally test drove it this morning, but I’d love to get your insights on other things.
1) what surprised you after having owned for awhile, that you never would have thought of before purchase?
2) the dealership I’m buying from is not a BMW dealer, but still a very large and reputable dealership group in town. Any downside?
3) is it madness to purchase a pretty expensive almost 2 year old EV given that battery warranty only runs another 6 years?

Is it a 2022 or 2023, how many miles, what option?

To be honest, I persoanlly would feel more comfortable purchasing from a BMW dealer but it really shouldn’t matter.

Are used IX’s purchased from a BMW dealer subject to CPO and therefore extended warranty? 6 years for the battery is pretty good and the batteries should last 200k-300k.

It’s the basic 4 years warranty on other items I would think about.

2023 with sport package, 15k miles and 22” wheels. Dealer ad says Ultimate Package 2, but I can’t find evidence anywhere that’s actually a thing?

I’ve looked at BMW USA inventory, some are CPO and most aren’t.

I looked at used iX’s, but only from BMW dealerships and that had CPO’d the car. I finally found a very lightly used ‘24 M60 that was just 3 months ‘old’ and had 2,000 miles on that had every option I wanted and the CPO, which offers excellent benefits along with a 5 year/100K warranty. It was worth the small premium I no doubt paid over what a CarMax, etc. would have charged me for the CPO alone, but the added bonus was that the car was showroom clean.

I personally would keep looking for a CPO.

One of the biggest challenges to buying a used BMW is getting the options you want. BMW makes that really difficult, because stuff you might assume would be standard on a premium car is either part of a package or an individual option. Therefore, I recommend you study the 2025 build and identify every option you want. Then confirm that your must-haves are on your target car. The 2025 is largely the same as the 2023, except for Driving Assistance Pro, that is only available on 2024 and newer. Here are my thoughts on the many options…
  • Rear-axle steering - Lots of folks swear by this, but I did not notice a huge need in my regular driving.
  • Air suspension - This I might have enjoyed if available when I ordered mine. The extra cush would have been nice.
  • iDrive 8.5 - This is an infotainment OS upgrade only available 2024 and newer. It is a significant UX improvement to the HVAC UI, and nice enhancements elsewhere.
  • Iconic Sounds - Love them. Hans Zimmer made them. Thought I would turn them off, but they are a keeper.
  • B&W Audio System - If you like high-end audio, this is a must-have. It is probably the best car audio system in any car. Period.
  • Harman Kardon Sound - The HK is very good and my minimum recommended audio system if you do not get the B&W sound system.
  • Bronze trim - Sweet little exterior cosmetic embellishment that I wish I had.
  • Head-up Display - The iX has one of the best. It is worth it.
  • Surround View - This should be standard, but it is not. It is worth confirming that it is present.
  • Upgraded Seats - I always opt for BMW's top tier of seating.
  • Radiant Heating - This is freaking amazing on cold days. I absolutely love it.
  • Ventilated Seats - This is another must-have option for me that is stand-alone, like Radiant Heating.

Yes ultimate package 2 was a thing back when BMW was having supply chain issues during the pandemic. You can find a little info here:

I would go with a cpo unit from a BMW dealership. Their goodwill to you & their relationship with corporate may be very helpful if you have any issues or whatever.
It is a good thing to be perceived as a loyal & reasonable customer, & visa-versa.

One other major consideration is the price. If you lease new, you essentially get it with a $20K discount off MSRP. So, I would not consider a used 2023 unless it is at least $30K off MSRP, and $40K is probably a better target.

Not true: 2023s have DA Pro. So do 2022s.

What they can do varies. For example, in 2023 DA Pro, the active driving assist is only fully hands free up to 40 mph, in 2024 it’s up to 85mph (I think).

My 2023 has Parking Assistant Pro with remote control parking and saved maneuvers, pre March 2022 builds do not.

Lots of subtleties, so be careful when buying used. If there’s a feature that’s a must-have on a 2025, when you find a used one, come on here and ask the forums. We know a lot more than even the BMW Geniuses (ask us how we know).

Agree. If you can find an executive demo, you can potentially score a really good deal and even lease it. I got my 2023 M60 with a sticker of $118k for ~$87k and am leasing for $824/mo. It’s a great ride!

I thought BMW named them differently when they got new capabilities. The 2024 DAPP does lane centering to 80 MPH. Did they call it the same in the prior MYs that only went to 40 MPH?

Interesting point. Mine is called Assisted Driving Plus in the manual. It’s part of the Active Driving Assistant Pro package on the sticker (or “Active Cruise with Stop & Go”)

Looks like it’s called “Highway Assistant” now.

Furthers my point of the forums being a great resource relative to dealers / geniuses. And definitely more than CarMax.

Thanks very much for this and all the other advice. Looking at one from a BMW dealership 2 hours away, not CPO but has all the options I want including multi-function seat (can’t believe lumbar support is not standard).

Yes, it was called DAPP on the iX. Same package name has been used on the G05 X5 since around 2019.

Ask them to include the CPO status as part of your negotiations!
