Is this a joke? This video reminds me of the Top Gear bits that make fun of the 'reasonably priced car'. This thing legitimately looks like a joke!
Who on EARTH would pay $125k for this car?!?! It's an i3 with a sexier body! Are you kidding me???? |

Guys... first of all. This isn't a normal BMW. It is meant to be economical, yet sporty as well.
And while the video didn't excite me, it did not sound that bad. Not to mention it wasn't accelerating or revving, just normal (maybe high-speed?) driving. Also, I remember in Top Gear's review they said in Sport Mode the exhaust sounds excellent, so I'm looking forward to that. I just wished they would have crammed some more power into it, but at least it gets almost double the MPG of a Prius.

Looking beyond the bare number of cylinders, I think this platform is very promising. Not addressing the other unique and awesome characteristics and tech in the i8, one can look at it as follows:
The 3 cylinder in the i8 is pretty amazing. Highest HP/L of displacement from any BMW engine. 231hp .. If that was an. I6, it'd be 462hp - more than the current BMW Twin Turbo V8 produces (445hp). The current N55 I6 engine is good for 320 HP. That is an honor shared with the E36 M3 which hit 100hp/L with its 3.0 I6 engine. Not too shabby of a stablemate. I can't wait for the Dinan tune for this thing. It surely has potential, and I for one believe BMW is strategically releasing it as such to make room for a more performance tuned / oriented version that will have more HP and less mpg. The name of the game for this first release is sustained mobility and the high mpg numbers; that will be the marketing for the i8. Who's to say a quietly released higher performance version won't be offered within 1-2 years of the i8's introduction. If not, I will be interested to see what Dinan or other tuners can do with it. And we all know they will love to get their hands on this car. Just sayin'. |

In fact, pretty soon they won't sound like anything but tire noise. This hybrid period, where we have both electric and combustion engines in the same car, is transitional until battery technology catches up with the necessary application for these cars.
