The theory is that since the vehicle is powered by both an electric engine and also a 1.5l; if you're using the electric engine primarily, since there are less moving/mechanical parts, that should in theory be less likely to be prone to faults.
I hope that makes sense. Of course I can't give you first hand-experience, I'm not that lucky. |

Reliability has been great. Between mine and 5 other friends we have 50k+ miles and it has been great with no drivetrain issues. It has the 1.5 3cyl engine that can be found in the new Mini, and with quite a bit more cars out there and a demographic that is usually of the spirited kind, they seem to be doing quite well.

In my case and as with any newly introduced vehicles, mine required the replacement of an instrument cluster and the turbo unit during the initial ownership period. Other than that and with 13 months of ownership, the i8 has performed very well in comparison to some performance cars I've driven in the past. What's more, I am constantly amazed at BMW's ability to achieve a paradox with the i8 - sporting performance with reduced carbon emissions and amazing fuel efficiency (these days I'm averaging 37 mpg each trip while switching between comfort and sports mode).
