Gas Cap Glitch, Won't Open
The gas cap on my i8 would not open after clicking the button to refuel so I took it in to my local BMW dealership and they did a software update that fixed the issue. The car was good for about 3 weeks and I had the same thing happen to me again. This time the refuel ready gauge would not go past 25% for some reason. I used the BMW assist feature to ask them what to do, they instructed me to find the green tab in the trunk which is hidden behind a cover you open on the passenger side and pull said green tab as its a manual release for the gas cap. I'm taking the i8 back to BMW on Monday to see what the issue is. Has anyone else experienced this problem?

Or, the vacuum sensor may be defective, which may explain why it gets stuck at 25%.
I don't think the software update fixed it. They must have manually released the cap and re-tested, and it must have temporarily worked. |

The issue came back again for a third time and the refuel ready froze at 25% again. I manually released the gas cap using the green tab in the trunk and when I opened the cap a bunch of air came out. Taking it back to BMW to see what they're going to do this time.

I experienced the same issues other than the 25% limit.
Always got an error on iDrive about a "Fuel System Malfunction" or something similar. Took it to BMW and they replaced a part of the assembly after about a week of diagnosis and trial and error! Annoying but seems to be working over the last couple of weeks fine. |

I just took my car out of storage a few weeks ago and I had the same issue. I went to refuel and it would not get past 25% I took it into the BMW dealership and it sat there a week waiting for parts, sensors and so on. I am still waiting for all parts to come in, but I decided to pick it up and drive it while I am waiting. It is still drivable but I would love to get the issue fixed!

Mine just did the same thing recently. I was also on a out of state road trip so I had to keep using the manual pull tab in the rear boot to open the cap manually to put gas in.
They first replaced a part & then the engine also started saying check engine & they replaced another part there. Then It came back again when I picked it up after only a day or so. Took it back again & they finally fixed it so far. They said they had to re calibrate the computers or something for the new part they installed as the instructions from BMW did not tell them that was needed but they said BMW will now include that & edit those instructions for workers so future ppl who have this issue know they need to not only replace the part but run a recalibration on the new part.

I had a similar issue too .I pressed the key fob buttons a few times to lock / unlock the doors but it seemed to not work . The solution was to press the button on the driver's door side . Voila , it was released .It was relief

Mine has been down at the dealers for a few days with the same problem. Initially it was getting stuck at 25% most of the time, occasionally though it would open fine. After a few failures the computer pops up a proper message saying fuel system problem and a little picture of the manual release tab in the trunk/boot.
Anyway, they've decided the pressure sensor in the tank is kippered so they will replace that when the parts arrive, unfortunately it's a tank-out job so will be a day and a half's effort. BMW should probably recall as it appears to be a common fault but being a big job I doubt they will. One thing to add to the list of things to look for when buying out of warranty in a couple of year's time....

Having exact same problem, just pulled car out from winter storage and fuel door refuses to operate. Used the manual release in trunk, biggest problem is closest i8 dealer is 1000 kms. away in Vancouver BC and I live in Calgary AB. Can't take it back after driving for a few days if they can't fix it right the first time.

Also, be sure to have your fuel tank less than half filled when bringing it in for this particular repair. |

Wait until the trunk sticks. That's happened to a few as well.
http://bmwi.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1244924 Also the car's electrical system can also overload itself and there will be no engine or motor power. Happens rarely when the drive train is trying to figure out which mode to go in at tip in from a stop or slow roll. Have to turn off ignition then back on for that. ....Old analog cars sometimes have their charm. |

Happened to me too last week Stuck at 25%.
Called BMW and the guy did not have a clue. I then thought I'd look around in the boot and found the release cable. |

Mine was a few weeks mainly because they couldn't get the coolant system refilled properly. I saw the document pack the technicians have to fill in for working on these cars, BMW Germany have plenty of documents available to help them with the procedure!

When I spoke with them and asked them to order a pressure sensor in advance, they said a number of things could cause it, and would decide what to do when they saw the car.
They inferred that it would then perhaps have to return for the fix. I won't give them it for more than a few days over summer, so I agree they need to research it in advance. In winter I am not so bothered as I rarely drive it. |
