Awesome glad you got to go as well. There were quite a few Bimmerpost members at the event.

Yeah, definitely cannot wait to drive it!

The key, if that's an accurate name for that... thingy?
Is a very welcome addition to a special car, and complements the whole "specialness" of the entire package.
I'm mighty impressed with the car, and the whole package, BMW are investing alot into it's future, and boy does it look impressive!
The "key" will drizzle down to more normal cars (i) eventually, or hopefully, because that was one sexy piece imo!

Wow, that car just got more sexier to me, especially with that key fob.

Lol at the key fob comment, so true - it looks better than most smartphones! Except, I'd still want the i8 even if it didn't have this key, as awesome as the key is...
And this where it goes...

Interesting additional info. Scott26, you obviously must be well connected within BMW to get scoops like this.
One thing I wonder about is how one would attach a key ring with other keys to the i8 key fob, like one can do with current BMW key fobs. Looks like that won't be an option here as I can't imagine keys hanging from the top of the fob where they would scratch the surrounding dash elements.

A special key pouch with the ring attachment? Maybe even a carbon fiber one - would be pretty sweet!

A protective case will be offered similar to what is offered with mobile telephones so the key is singular but a special key ring will be offered for the i8.
The i8 will also feature comfort access.
Here is the case for the i3.

The only issue with this boils down to the same reason I don't use protective covers for my phones - namely, all slots and chargers (other than just a USB cable) are designed to fit the device only and have to be removed. So if you want to keep the i8 key in that nice slot in the center console, you have to take off the cover.

By the way Scott, does the i8 key charge by induction just by being in the car, or does it have to be in the slot to charge?

I was assuming the key makes both a data and power connection when plugged in, and that's how it knows the amount of fuel and battery charge remaining. This would be similar to plugging in an iPhone so the BMW Connected app can read the car's mileage, fuel level and expected range.

Yes the BMWi app applies to the key also. You can use the BMW connected drive app on many BMWs today.
Some protective cases have the slots for items like headphones , USB, Charger etc.
The i8 key case will be something unique to the car.

A similar key will be introduced on the next BMW 7er.

In the meantime - the streets stand still....

With each new photo that gets posted of the i8, I fall more in love with the look of the car. Can't wait for its arrival at U.S. dealers.

Scott26, any more precise info on when ordering guides will be arriving at U.S. dealers?
