Why does it have to look so ugly?

So you have to get the $2,700 "Tera World" to get a darker color interior.

Not a fan of this but I could see how this car could appeal to women or HS girls.

Thanks. The i3 Configurator has been up a few days now. The car needs more color options both exterior and interior.

Besides more colors, offer the frozen gray accent with all colors. The frozen blue accent is obnoxious.

This car has so much hype and this thread is dead. Wow, if this were a "M3/M4 configurator live" thread. The interest/traffic would be through the roof.

I can't wait for the "i" programs sales numbers spin job. Will we ever get the true R&D cost of this program? Would be interesting to know what each i3 cost BMW.

All gone quiet on the sales figures after all the initial hype!! Won't be long before they start the discounts

I know it’s CFRP construction and all, but over $46K base and $55K with everything specced out before some tax discount? I suppose BMW can justify these prices if they can at least be able to ace some simple crash tests and make it look more like a normal car rather than like a toy car inside and out…

I drove this, I like this, I could live with it daily, but it is about the same cost (before the tax credit) as a 328i optioned the way I would get both. Hmmm, that makes it a tough sell.

The i3 is not a replacement for a typical car, and if you look at it that way, you'll never see the rationale.

If you DO live in a city, or are within the commute to one and do it regularly, it begins to make sense. There are LOTS of people that are in that category. Short trips with a combustion engine are horrible for fuel efficiency, oil life, exhaust life, and potentially comfort levels (and, lots of sitting in traffic at zero MPG doesn't help much, hot or cold). On the i3, you can start out your trip with the cabin already comfortable while still on the charger at home, and have max range available. Over time, more and more places will be installing charging stations where people work and shop. While I'm retired now for a few years, where I did work, they had chargers available. Progressive companies in the places where it makes sense, will likely install them to keep the people that can afford these cars working for them.

I'm still waiting to sit in one to make my decision if it will augment my car ownership stable.

How well a car functions, is more important to me than how it looks. The right tool for the job.

Completely agree. I think this vehicle will be a hard sell with a starting price of 46k. Once the initial hoopla wears off, I'm not sure BMW will be able to sell these without significant incentives.

I got to drive one at a local BMW dealership event. It was ok, nothing special. One of those situations where going in I was expecting so much more and it wasn't what I expected. BMW should not have overhyped this car.

I think the Volt is more for your money and much more useful. The Volt is actually a really good drive, I was surprised. Chris Harris liked it as well in a recent review.

I put a deposit down for the i3, purely for business use.

I realize the car may not win a lot of beauty pageants but it does draw attention out on the open road. No doubt some good advertising for our company once I put our logo on the car. In addition, I reimburse my sales guys for mileage (@ $0.56/mi) much more than what it'd cost us to lease and utilize the i3.

The argument could be said, "why not go with a Leaf / Volt / Spark / Fit EV, etc.?" They're cheaper and almost as efficient but it just doesn't draw attention.

Can't wait!

Wanted the i8 but this will do

Drove this car at a BMW event and actually love it. Great acceleration, comfortable, fun to drive. Getting ready to order one mainly because my wife drives 100 miles per day in a 2012 328i and according to BMW USA rep, this car will cost approx. $2.00 per hour based on the average electric cost. Comparable to the Tesla at $9.50 per hour. Considering we spend approx. $60.00+ per week in premium gas, this will save us a chunk of change every year.
Car looks funky but the resolution and new features on the nav along with a great ride can't beat it. The one issue we had is that the controls are on a stalk that is hard to reach if the steering wheel is turned. Have to put your hand through the steering wheel opening to reach the start/stop and to place it in drive. Hope they correct this before the final release.
We wanted to order the i8 but all 800 units are sold for 2014 and the folks that bought them are auctioning them off at $100,000.00 over invoice and hard to believe they are selling for those $$$. and the car has not even been released yet.
We decided on the i3 until the i8 goes through its second year.
We also have a 2013 M6 convertible if we need some zoom.
Thanks
