Am I crazy to trade my M2C?

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
I test drove a Tesla Model 3 and S. I found the S to be a more planted and a smoother ride, but the 3 felt like a fast Honda Civic. I was not impressed coming from an M2C.

Then I drove the i4 M50i and was blown away with how good it felt. Reminded me a bit of the E90 solid feel. In fact when I got back to my M2C I felt like the car was not as solid and stable like the i4. Even the steering felt weird in my M2C. Now I am in the process of talking to a dealership here in San Diego to get my hands on the 2025 i4.

Do you guys think I am that crazy to trade a M2C for an i4? Did anyone here do the same? M2C is regarded as a great car overall, but to me the i4 felt even better. Therefore I am here to check my sanity!

Also I didn't test drive the regular i4 40i or whatever its called. Not sure if its worth to pay the premium for M50i but let me know what you guys think.

For 2025, will there be a M60i variant as well?

Thanks in advace for your inputs.

I haven't traded my i4 for an M2, I can tell you that.

I like the M50 power. If you're coming from an M2, get the M50 or wait for the M60. If you just want a normal car, 40i.

I’m not planning on getting rid of my F23. “From my cold dead hands!” So I got my wife to buy an i4! Went for the i4 x40. It has more power and better range with 18 inch wheels than the single motor versions and costs a good bit less than the M50. If raw power is important to you, go for the M50. I think the x40 is more comfortable and fast enough for us. But that’s completely a personal choice.

No, you are not crazy…. After 7+ years of ownership of my modified F80 M3, I “thought” I would move into a G80 M3 or G87 M2. Then I test drove a i4 40i and became very “intrigued”. Made my M3 feel a bit slow (and it is not slow). Test drove a i4 M50 a bit later and I was sold.

Got my i4 M50 with all the performance stuff (20” wheels, big brakes, etc.). Not worried about the range hit as I wanted the max performance (coming from my M3) and I can charge at home. Also, one of my future mods are some lighter 20” wheels so I should get a bit more range back 😉.

Do your research on the “nuances” of EV ownership so you come in eyes wide open. But if it all checks out for you, I say go for it…

Thanks for your unbiased feedback.
FYI I am also intrigued by the i4 M50 already. I will probably wait for the M60 then.

I am also looking to get the G80 M3. I want to keep the M2C but with a family I am mostly using it for dropping kids to school and running daily errands. I guess I need a 4-door performance car for long trips.

Do you guys think there’s an overalap between i4 M50/M60 and the G80 M3?

Sorry for going a little off track.

Definitely some overlap. I think the i4 M50/M60 targets performance minded enthusiasts who are looking to get into an EV, but want a similar level of performance as the ICE car counterpart. My last 3 performance cars were M3’s (‘95, ‘05 and ‘17).

The i4 M50 is not a true M car. But it is very close IMHO, and provides a glimpse of what a future fully electric M car will look like…

In the real world, i4 is a lot faster in a straight line at legal and super legal speeds compared to an M2, M3, or M4. EVs have instant torque, and the M50 has A LOT of instant torque. On track, the real M cars are superior, because you can have them always on boil. You can't realistically do that in the real world. The M cars will definitely corner better than an i4, but again, how fast can you truly corner in the real world?

If I had an M4 CSL and an i4 M50, I'd barely drive the M4 except at the track, as the i4 would be superior everywhere else. Well, maybe not at cars and coffee.

Agree with pretty much everything you said here. It was that basic methodology that led me to get the i4 M50 this time instead of an M3 or M2 (and I was looking for a reason to get into the “right” EV for me). That said, having owned 3 M3’s in the past, you don’t need to be a professional race car driver to realize “some” of what makes the M cars special, even on public roads .

As far as “showing off” the i4 a bit, like at Cars & Coffee, etc., by the time I am done modifying mine, I don’t think I will have any problems fitting in . Hell, I have already received quite a few compliments on my i4 after just a few weeks of ownership. And the only real noticeable mods I have done are the yellow DRL and M Performance slotted/drilled rotors ..!!

Bucky -

I did EXACTLY what you are thinking. I had a 2020 Hockenheim Silver M2C with DCT. I was ready to back out at the last minute after I had waited 5 months for the i4M50 I ordered. Took me one drive and I was hooked on the i4M50. It is not the scalpel that the M2C is - but it is a MUCH MUCH better daily driver. The car has been perfect and I have been so pleased to have the hatch, etc. My family likes the M50 much better as well. The reality is that the M2 was better for the track...and that is about it. I tracked it twice and that was it - so I really wanted an EV and really wanted something that looked different and had some excitement, but was also a competent daily. The M50 really was a great choice and I am very pleased....I rarely miss the M2C. I got a 2023 i4M50 in black sapphire metallic with the 20's and almost every option. I have received countless compliments and the car is just sharp. I would not hesitate to pull the trigger. Hope this helps.

Thanks, I appreciate your inputs! This is very helpful. If I do make the jump, I will probably go for the M60i.

Glad to hear that you are excited to drive the i4 M50!

I own a 21 M2C 6sp and an i4M50. I wouldn't trade either car for eachother. There is definitely some overlap but they both hit marks that the other can't. There's no little fun slides around corners or the sound in an i4 obviously, while the M2C doesn't eat up miles as comfortable or carry people/cargo as well. If it were one or the other I'd probably stick with the M2C for as long as possible as there will be plenty of time to own a fast EV, but the F87 is something the new G87 or i4 can't replicate.

OG F87 6M and i4 M50 here. As Mr. Cheesle said, they are SO different and each nice on its own way.

Though I can understand wanting the peace and quiet of the i4 after that bleating of the S55 (kidding... just kidding!)

i4 is a really nice commuter; but I can't see that I will fall in love with the handling like I do every time I throw the M2 into corner and swing out the rear a bit. I would never jump into the i4 if I want to 'just go for a drive'.

You will miss the M2C for sure... but only you can tell if it is worth it for what you gain.

I am new to BMW, having been 15 years an Audi owner. Following a total loss of my wife's Q5, she chose a new 330e and I have been impressed in every way. So as my beloved Audi etron GT Performance lease ended, I ordered my i4 M50 to replace it, and have had it two weeks. The Audi was a great EV. But this is a better car in nearly all respects. I have had the Audi S7, and RS 6 as well and this M50 is just a step forward from all of my previous cars.

I had an i4 M50 for almost a year before getting my M8 Comp.

Before buying the i4, I had test driven M3/M4/M8. The same thoughts as you led to my decision to buy the i4. I then regretted it and was able to return it to BMW. The i4 is not fun to drive. It’s a great daily though—having an M and an i4 would be great.

The instant torque, silence, and refinement get old quick when you don’t have any exhaust sound or the ability to shift gears. Driving an i4 is just boring because you are not involved in driving—your just hitting the go pedal. The M8 (and any other M car) are just on a different level in terms of driving experience.

That being said, there are times I miss the serene nature of the i4 for a second when going over a bad road in my M8. But then I hit the gas and shift at redline with the V8 bellowing and am reminded why the i4 is not fun.

Both are great vehicles within their categories, but if I had to choose one it’d be the ICE M vehicle hands down.

If you truly speed, then you want it quiet. Only thing the loud exhaust attracts on the outside is law enforcement. I have sped right by an officer, and he didn't even turn around. In a gas car, I would have been toast. I don't really miss my loud engines and exhaust, as now I have the pleasure of being able to hear all the entertaining noises of a straining ICE engine next to me. Yes, would love to have another 100HP or so, but until then, instant torque is something I enjoy every time. Not something boring, its just an attribute that makes it much more enjoyable when driving.
