Pitkis, if you get a chance to try edrive with EcoPro, I'd be curious to know what that does to the range. I have a 10 mile (17 km) commute to work, and was hoping I could go there and back on a single charge. Sounds like I may fall a little short.

My next car. Think I'm passing over the M cars for this. So much sexier.

Maybe in a good day you can do both ways in one battery. i8 goes at least 25 km, I can promise, but 34 km may be a bit on the limit. I think pure e-range doesn't depend on main program selected, so once you press "e-only" button, it overrides all other presetted driving modes as far as I have understood. And once battery is out, it somehow continues with "max ePower" mode in a previously selected main driving mode. I have to check this again, what happens if you drive out battery in Max ePower and have Sport-mode presetted. You have "Sport Max ePower" or what?

If someone has i8 manual in English PDF-format, please PM me. I have to try Eco Pro + eDrive and report you. BTW, 1000 km broken today

Nice! Congrats on the milestone!
I'll dig around for a PDF manual. Maybe there's a way to save it from the app and post it. |

Like the color
Great looking design. I like the color, almost like my 95 M3 in Avus Blue.
I'm picking up my F80 M3 up in September in Muenich. I 8 is more of a show car to me. Get hydrogen generator going and you can get more than a few miles it. |

Today I had some problems. I drove fuel out and rolled to gas station with eDrive. No problem with that except I estimated distance quite close to limit. eRange was 1 km when I parked to refuel. And perhaps due low energy left (?!) fuel tank cover did not release. Even though I pushed opening button (left door) several time, cover didn't open. Then I dissected manually the whole cover unit including the frame, fuses and mechanism by itself. The cover got off actually very easily, far too easy to do that. Then I refueled the car (38,5 litres when completely empty), installed the cover unit again and drove home. At home cover opened with no problem. Now, a good question: if you drive your car really emply, no fuel, very little battery, does EcoPro mode drive all electronics out so that even fuel tank cover won't open? Beware of this possible problem. Photo about dashbord before refuel. Quite little range left. 542 km driven with one tank.

The fuel tank is pressurized. The fuel cover will not open until the pressure is released. I don't know if an empty tank makes depressurizing just take longer, or if there was some malfunction. How long did you wait before you disassembled the fuel door?

About 15 minutes. I think this whole episode is somehow related to very low battery combined with empty fuel tank, but a really weird case anyway. I have to try again and drive fuel out with more battery to see if it's just a matter or running out fuel or both battery & fuel.

Yeah 15 minutes is plenty I would imagine; definitely sounds like a malfunction / not enough battery left. Very interesting.

It may just be a coincidence @Pitkis, as the i8 isn't the first new car to have gremlins, nor is it the first car to have the fuel filler flap locked closed (I even recall an episode on Top Gear where Clarkson couldn't get it open). Definitely one to report back to the BMW and to also keep an eye on.

Real pain if battery is out and can't refuel?! Without my own help I'd be at service point now, towed by truck. Being a pioneer is not always easy and this was no harm for me. I just wanted to bring this up now. Cover unit is easy to take out manually, so if you face this problem, just take it out and do refuel...

I believe the BMW university documents show how to manually open both the plug-in socket cover and the fuel lid.

Definitely sounds like a 'new car gremlin'. I had one of them on my Porsche 981 convertible - the roof became stuck halfway down! Porsche originally thought it was just my car, but then a few other cars had the same fault and it was discovered to be a design flaw with one of the microswtiches. Once they replaced that I never had another problem with it.

The re-fueling (and issues with getting the filler cap open) is addressed in the Drivers Guide, which I realize you can't access, so let me list the key points for you:
1) Switch off the ready-to-drive function (start/stop button). Could be easy to forget to do this when the car is running on eDrive. 2) Press the fuel button, which allows the tank to start venting. Tank aeration status is shown in the instrument cluster. In rare cases, it may take several seconds to aerate. When the aeration is finished, a message is displayed in the instrument cluster and the filler cap is released for opening. 3) Open filler cap. If the filler cap does not open within 10 minutes of the fuel lock being released, the filler cap locks again. Press the fuel button again. If you have to open the filler flap manually (e.g. due to an electrical fault), open the cover in the right hand trim panel located in the trunk. Pull the green tag with the fuel pump symbol and the fuel filler flap is unlocked. Hope this helps. |

Out of fuel caution
Pitkis, be cautious actually trying to run the fuel tank dry, as a future test. I'm not sure about the i8 yet, but if the elec fuel pump is submerged in the tank, the liquid keeps it cool, by design. So running it dry can cause problems, as on other cars with this typical design. Plus, running the fuel rail dry can also be problematic re air/vapor locks and injector issues.
By the way, your overall insights are very interesting and helpful as we await our cars. Drive happy, drive well fueled! |

Do you have the "lock after drive away" option activated? Usually, if the car is locked, you can't open the cover.
