Observations from 30 000 km service - eRange going up with new SW

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
I got my car from scheduled 30 000 km maintenance today. Project was carried out in our local BMWi Laakkonen Service, the only i-service in my country. Needless to say that my car was their first i8 to go through scheduled 30 000 km inspection.

My service visit included also windscreen replacement, so total time to wait for parts delivery from factory & installation was three and half days. Service was professional and all went fine. Regular engine checks and new SW was installed, nothing special to report.

There were five different BMW factory afterchecks that had to be done - some Isofix installation modification, underside cover installation checks and fuel tank welding inspection among them. Fortunately all but Isofix checks were ok and replacement of fuel tank was not needed...

For some reason my i8 lost almost 150 km from distance travelled. When I arrived I had driven a bit more than 30 000 km but after service there stand some 29920 km. Service could not explain what happened, all guys were confused. Maybe this is somehow connected to the first day experience back in 8/2014 when I noticed that I had driven about 100 km more in the first one or two days than I actually had traveled? Now it was dialed back?? Really strange.

The best news so far is longer eRange. My previous longest distance measured was about 26 km solely with eDrive. That was achieved with very careful driving. Usually range seen in dashboard is 28-29 km after full recharge. When I went to change tyres this evening and started to test a new set of Bridgestones, eRange displayed was 34 km. Never seen that much there. So I instantly decided to try what's the new eRange - and managed to go 33,3 km using eDrive only! A really nice change - and using track compound tyres. With OEM low-rolling eco-set that might go over 35 km, maybe even close to 37 km offically announced?! I didn't try to push out final meters now, just drove around the town at speeds of up to 50 mph with practically no coasting at all.

I'm really impressed that new SW installation has given me at least 30-35% more eRange that previous version. +++ BMWi, well done. I hope you all get your cars updated. Maybe we some day see eDrive range going over 40 km with current hardware? At least this new development is promising.

I'll try OEM compound later on this week to see if I can break 35 km eRange.

Edit: My car (Protonic Blue) with another nice white i8

Thanks for update. I wonder if new software is allowing a larger percentage of the battery capacity to be used. 5.2 of 7.1 is only 73% while most other batteries will allow 85-90% use.

Is this a software update due on all cars or something that was due on your car after a certain mileage?

I agree, that should most likely be a SW update for all of us. I will investigate with my SA.

I think so too. But question is, how new is this update? Cars from now on get in installed from factory, but how about rest of us? Some drivers have reported longer eRange, so they may already have newer SW. Or they may get even longer now with this new one? Who knows.

BTW, low fuel is now clearly seen in HUD. Earlier I had only yellow battery for a seconds without text. Now it says "Total Battery + Fuel Range under 90 Km" with full big text. A good feature, after once in early days thinking that range seen means only fuel range...Perhaps I'm not the only one who almost run out of battery on highway due confusing indicators.

Where can we check the software of the car we have? My car is 1 month from factory and I am getting 20km. I think they screwed up something to your benefit....did you also get the Finnish software or maybe that is just the i drive software.

Interesting. I was sure you have this new version. Dunno about Finnish SW, I think only local modification is tel. number to the service...I have to check if they changed it. Btw, yesterday eRange display was 36 km after charging. Nice And, yes, Herttoniemi BMWi Service is now officially open.

Any other member been already in 30 000 km service?

Request to Pitkis:

Please do this in your car:
1) Turn on ignition
2) Hold down the tripmeter reset button (lower left corner of speedometer screen) for more than 10 seconds.
3) With the first item "Identification" selected on the screen, hold down the button for 2+ seconds

What software does your car show?

Mine shows (built 03/2015):

Conv. index 70609 1/mls
SWFL 1 08 00 00 23 75 02 08 25
VIN
HMI Version 01.0A.06

I did the same but got only that HMI Version -text. Nothing more, just gray box behing it. HMI version was same, though. There were just 01, 02, 03, 04 and 10 options on the screen (without any explanations) and I leafed all them through. Only 01 gave me any text, other slot were just gray screen...?!

There were couple of reports in fb group, so obviously it's available for all of us.

My car had a drivetrain fault car lost the software apparently so was taken to dealer and had software re loaded and now has another 3 miles range on a full charge so guess I have probably had the latest software installed on the car

Wanted to report this thorughly as I have done research on this. I have now the same number of software as Pitkis, I originally had the same number, but the date was different, mine was MAY his and mine now are dated June, sorry the email in which the software number was, got deleted by my android phone.

Anyway, nothing happened to my car, stil the erange maximum is 27, usually 24. We noticed however that Pitkis has an older idrive software, mine is 003.001.002.

So either this is related to the fact that the car adapts to the range, Jaakko drives in edrive but Eco Pro, I drove in edrive, but comfort (aircon on), or then the older software 002.052.001 just shows a different readout of the same thing. I see the estimated remaining time of charging etc. not visible in Pitkis car

So sorry, the new SW in my opinnion does nothing.

Although it shouldnt matter, my car has the highest range when charged in a tyoe 2 16A public charger. Go figure.

I also now changed the charging setting from low to maximum as Pitkis has, so will see if that makes a differnce.

Perhaps from 24->27 (28 pops up until I start the engine) which is the range I have?

I verified the results. I drove as much as I could (when children are in the car, eco pro a/c is too weak) in ECO pro. I also have the max charging setting and recharged in a type 2 charger, result 30 km range. I suspect the range dial works similar to the fuel range. It calculates electric consumption and when you get that lower, you will get a bigger theoretical range also. For me when I press back and forth comfort vs eco pro, there is a 1 km difference and it hopps back and forth, the range being longer with eco pro. This happens while the car is not moving.

Today saw the 30km range for the first time...when I pressed start it jumped to 25km and when I engaged eco pro it jumped to 26km. True km were 20.0 in the city...

So I get my laser lights installed and softwares updated and suddenly I am seeing 29 km range, when before this, my erange had fallen to 21-24km as it was cold here. My car has 7000km now. I wonder if the software releases full potential of the battery after certain km. This is hard to explain as it also felt today that the car went further on edrive alone than before, so I dont think it can only be the zeroing of the sw. Odd.
