winter tires

Dealer says you have to by new wheels if you want to put the BMW recommended winter tires on i8 eve though the tires are the same size as OEM. Does anyone know why that is?

Hi Mehoolio78,

The recommended winter tire is a square set up of BLIZZAK LM-32 Size: 215/45R20 95V XL, while your car with the summer set up is running a staggered set up of 215/45/20 in the front and 245/40/20 in the rear. You may want to check with Tire Rack and set if they can recommend a winter set up for you opposed to the $4K plus BMW wants for the i8 winter package.

Ahh, thanks a lot! I will look into tire rack options for winter or all season package.

How can I find out the wheel width? I think I have the upgraded OEM package 8.5" rear width and 7.5" front width.

Thanks!

So I found these Blizzak LM-32's on tire rack with the same staggered sizes as the summer tire set up.

You would be able to put these on the same rims right?

Unless you want/ need to run snow chains, in which case you need narrow rears as well (on the car's tires, I mean...).

Snow chains on a car like the i8? If the weather is that bad, take another car cos your ground clearance is likely to be problem.
I'd be happy taking the i8 out in snow/ice with winter rubber, it's just the other idiots on the road who don't have winter rubber that worry me so I'll stick to my old X5

Just sayin' . For completeness of the information. There are areas of the planet where winter tires are sufficient but you do need to carry chains as a backup. And I understand the i8 is a lot of fun on snow.

I saw that too! That is my plan when winter season hits. I like the OEM wheels and would like to just place the winter tires on them, so this seems like best bet.
