I would have posted first reply except I was logged off. Does this mean it's electric only as it's virtually silent? Need the engine noise!

I'm up for one, to replace my existing wonderful i8, but what about BMW UK's terrible dealer service, that will take some stomaching a second time around ?

I don't believe, local emissions means it can run EV in city's I think. It's a bigger deal in Europe than the States.

I think BMW will stick with hybrid until batteries are light enough to have a decent handling EV as well as decent range.

At some point in the future, I can see people replacing the gas engine with an e-motor and a few more batteries without making it heavier. Renault almost doubled the range on the Zoe without increasing battery weight this year, it's coming....

Still a gorgeous car, I'm sure it will be stunning, but 6 years after the original i8 debut? I guess it was about time. BMW should have worked on another new i model, (Tesla Model S Competitor) instead of waiting so long for the Roadster to come out. IF we ever get another i concept besides the i3 and i8, it won't be another 2-3 years before its on the road.

^ BMW has shunted the i-brand and has decided to move more quickly to electrify the core brand. I think the i8 and the i-next (possibly what they are calling the next i3?) will stay with the brand for sometime, I don't think we will see any other new vehicles.

I maintain the opinion that the i3 is the beta test car for electrifying the core vehicles. They have learned a lot from the i3, battery tech has progressed, now is the time. First up? 3-series and x3.

And the i Brand is going more towards autonomous driving and other fuel sources other than just electric...

And the i8 is the beta test car for the intermediate hybrids until full electric is achievable - 330e, X5e etc...

They need to give the i8 50+ more hp. Can't have your hybrid super car beaten by a 550i

But what about the roof? When will BMW announce if it is a retractable hard-top, or a manual removable top?

i8 sales for June are a disaster - wonder why?

I finally went down to our dealer and got into one - not an easy task. The interior was OK but nothing special IMO.

However, getting out of the damn think is a joke - you need to be a Harry Houdini to pivot your legs around / slide your butt up over the high sill / and wiggle your way out.

Can you imagine your date in a cocktail dress or short skirt having to throw her legs up in the air and shimmy over that thing?

Sure, all the guys would be gawking but not at the i8.

Eh I'm 6'3 225 pounds and I have no issue getting in and out. It's weird but you like develop a technique. Woman in a cocktail dress would def have a tough time though.

A disaster how? I keep reading this since the sales report was posted and keep scratching my head at how people dissect information nowadays. Production has been winding down on the coupe. So perhaps say "production has been a disaster". That would be more accurate and still inaccurate as can be.

On another note getting in and out of cars with elevated doorsills is quite simple: 1. Sit on the doorsill. 2. Slide into the seat "ass first" 3. bring legs in one at a time. Not exactly rocket science...

Now that that's cleared up let's get back to the Roadster.
