Level 2 circuit and receptacle installation - Holy crap!
I'm getting bids from electricians to install a NEMA 14-50 outlet for the 40A JuiceBox that I want to buy. I knew it was going to be somewhat high since the panel is in the back left of the house and the garage is in the front right. Nonetheless, I'm in shock over the estimates.
#1 - $1,250 to run it along the back side of the house, under the soffit in conduit, until they can get into the attic, then run it straight across and down into the garage. #2 - $2,975 to do the same thing as above or $2,700 to run conduit on the exterior of the house, ending at the receptacle on the side of the house. It seems like a run of around 125'. The quotes are using a 50A circuit and 6 AWG. Does this seem crazy high or was I nuts to think I could get this done for $6-800? |

That is really high. Have you checked on rebates. Socal had $2500 rebate to cover installation and product at one point.
Most installs are around $500, but depend on amount of work required. |

$75 rebate here in AZ. LOL! I am tackling it myself with the help of someone that knows what they are doing. Materials alone were $400, so I don't think the lower bid was too outrageous after all.

125' run is pretty far. Guessing that's why they're using 6 AWG and probably insulated wire over that distance. With 4 wires I'd do 1" hard metal conduit outside plus metal flex in the attic because of the thickness... $500-$550 in material. 5 hours @ $100/hr + Building Permits. It's reasonable if they're doing that.

I have the holster for the plug that came with the EVSE, but I don't want to mount it on the side of the house (stucco is a real PITA), where the car parks, nor do I want to bring it into the garage each time. Anyone have a creative idea for a plug holster mount? I'm thinking of fastening it to a wood block that's on the end of a stake that I'll drive into the ground. |

A friend of mine built a 4 ft pedestal with a outdoor porch lamp style light on top of it. The charger was installed inside the pedestal behind a small cabinet door. It keeps the charger dry when it rains and adds a convenient and aesthetically pleasing light for your driveway. He used similar materials from the trim of his house, in this case stone tiling, to make it match. It looked really nice!

Check with your state!
Here in Illinois they pay for almost the whole installation. In my case my electrical system on my house was upgraded and i didn't pay a dime! You have to dig to find all the incentives as they aren't going to tell you otherwise. |
