Feel like I stumbled into a vwvortex thread about GTI vs Mustang. Writing this discussion off. Meanwhile EVO gets more traffic for being the dissenting voice on the i8. Compare apples to oranges with someone who loves apples and guess which wins. Last edited by Carac; 09-05-2014 at 09:28 AM.. |

BMW did well for a first try. But really! What is so great about a 3 cylinder motor & a weenie electric boost? Nothing worth that kind of money here. At least in the E92 the motor is a work of art. Need to see way more technology to justify this price.

We all have different priorities. The reasons I did not go with an i8:
* not available for a test drive before all the 2014 allocated cars where sold * the Chris Harris review. The i8 does not respond as a proper sportscar should at the limits. So I went back and forth between a 991 and a Cayman GTS and ordered the latter. Which, where I live, when fully configured is so close to the price of a pure impulse i8 that it is negligible. I would really like to have a hybrid drivetrain this time but it was not to be. Maybe next time BMW will get it right (for my wants/needs). If not then Porsche will surely do! Enjoy your i8s! |

Actually, the i8 is the only car that I like that BMW currently makes and I admire the all the technology and advanced materials, but IMO it's not the sports car that BMW proclaims it is. |

@ATSR- 'IMO it's not the sports car that BMW proclaims it is."
Below are all the excerpt from the i8 press release that mention "sports car". So were does BMW claim it will be a 911 beating raw sports car? Where does it fall short of what BMW claimed? What other hybrid car in this price range is better? All that is mentioned is its a progressive forward looking interpretation of a sports car with city car efficiency..which is exactly what BMW has made...it offers sports car like performance with incredible efficiency. Something no other car in its price range can do. "world’s most forward-looking sports car; revolutionary interpretation of BMW’s hallmark driving pleasure; groundbreaking premium character clearly defined in terms of sustainability." "And now the BMW Group can unveil the BMW i8 – a new, cutting-edge generation of sports car." "The BMW i8 offers a revolutionary and future-focused interpretation of BMW’s signature driving pleasure – and in so doing, makes its case as the world’s most progressive model in the sports car segment." "With the performance attributes of a pure-bred sports car and the fuel consumption of a small city model," |

But point taken. It's not for everyone. But dismissing it as a sports car without acknowledging how close it comes even with the "handicap" of its hybrid system, battery weight, etc does the car a disservice and misses the point. |

I'm a long term BMW owner and currently own a 911 S (in the same color as Evo's test car here). I came in wanting to see the i8 keep up or beat the 911.
But it's kinda of pointless that they took a Carrera S with the optional $17K power kit only a very few people will ever get. I'd like to see how it does against a regular Carrera S most of us own. |

I like these comparisons because they CAN make sense for some of us. Looking at the price point, these two cars do compete. I am on the list for the i8 and am also lusting a 911. I will get either one and unless I drive the i8, I cannot make the right decision. I am a BMW fan but rather critical about their latest cars, granted I mainly purchase M cars since the regular offerings are mainly boring and diluted to appeal to the masses.
I8 as a poser mobile....give me a break. It is breakthrough technology with some quirks since it is so new. The 911 is exactly the opposite, 50 years of evolution. Looking at the current trend in automotive evolution, I will do my best to hold on to my S65 though. |

I wonder how badly is the 911 hybrid going to beat the i8? Probably wont be much of a competition there either. Last edited by Wolfinwolfsclothing; 09-05-2014 at 11:46 AM.. |

Agree. And it would've made more sense if only they picked 911 S without the optional powerkit.

Performance aside.
Did anyone spot and noticed the BUTTERFLY at time 3:10 landing on the BMW round front emblem? Something tells me this car is so GREEN CAR FRIENDLY that even nature likes it. 😂 |

OK, seriously, was this really worth knowing? No!
I mean, what buyer of either one of these cars would be worrying, comparing whether the I8 could keep up with a Porsche 430 HP, Power Kit S? If I had the money (and I don't) I would buy the Porsche 50th Anniversary Edition 911 and never buy another BMW ever. My M3 would become my DD and my Porsche would become my weekend car. Enough said. BTW, it sucks not having more money |

Disappointing but considering what it is it did alright against the Porsche.
