Its a different kind of response to a sports car in conventional terms. That what makes the i8 so unique.

Expect this drivetrain in a 911 and then you'll see where it blows the i8. The 850k for a 918 is an entirely different performance league. My guess is that Porsche will be developing this for the 911 as an option as will Audi in their upcoming R8 model. In my opinion, both of these will leave this "ugly duckling" behind in both performance and looks. |

I want to like it but I just can't understand the design. The hood scoop kills the front for me. The back looks a mess. The side profile not bad. The blue trim is horrible. I feel BMW could have done so much better than this design. I know some people like it, some love it and some hate it. I'll have to see it in person to see if I just dislike it or really just hate it.
I appreciate they really seemed to try something a little different from everything else that is out there but just missed the mark IMHO. For this money I'd prefer the M5 100 times over. |

Wow you really have it out for the i8, eh? The Panamera hybrid is slow. Even the Panamera S doesn't come close. The GTS does, though. Many people also really hate the looks, although I'm not one of them. I almost bought a Panamera GTS last year. In the looks department, don't even kid me, no comparison. A Porsche 911 hybrid will possibly be more expensive than an i8 without any of the uniqueness. The Audi will still be running a body design that's been around for a while, and the i8 performance is already ballpark to the R8 V8, if you compare the numbers as a whole. I would not hesitate to choose i8 over any of the cars you mentioned, and if you think it's an ugly duckling that's your opinion, but to many it's a gorgeous one of a kind design in today's automotive landscape. As you concede, and as stated continuously, the 918, LaFerrari, and P1 are in proper supercar or hypercar territory and are not in the same league as the i8 - they are 3 of a kind in a league of their own, with the prices to match. |

BMW prototypes...
Quote:
The red box is for testing at the 'Ring for vehicle speed and GPS data. Its very common to see at the 'Ring when the big car companies are testing there. Also... some times you will see a prototype with a small(4 inch long pipe, maybe 1 inch in diameter mounted on the rear of the roof, like on this i8, see RR of roof panel). Inside is a small "hot wire" that can tell the driver the true vehicle speed(it has a wire that runs inside the rear of the cabin). BMW uses this when testing different diameter tires on pre production cars to determine what size tires to go with. Dackel PS: i8 pics are courtesy of: http://www.hadel.net/autos/html/d_pkw_bmw.html sensor(right rear) on roof for true vehicle speed... red track data box... and sometimes it is mounted to the rear of the car too.

Just looks weird especially the rear. Who the hell wants a sports car with a damn 3cyl engine?
