I like his reviews but too bad he didn't do this kind of review on the LaFerrari instead of a fluff piece. He compared the i8 to the P1, 918 and LaFerrari which all cost nearly 10 times more and are in a different category completely. The only thing he compared the LaFerrari to was other Ferraris. I guess he doesn't want to get banished by Ferrari again

Don't get me wrong Tesla has a great product but there is a good chance that BMW with its heritage and $$$ behind it, will bring electric cars that are just as good if not better. Let's face it, model S is hideous

It's a electrical honda Accord. The i8 is light years ahead in design
Yes I would actually. I would take a usable 4 seat Telsa P85 over the i8 and save about $40k. The fact the Telsa is 100% electric makes it more attractive.

i8 is a cool car. But when it comes to a sports car, I would still rather have a full petrol powered car.

Basically Chris comes to conclusion the i8 is just o.k. as a sports car and basically a look at me city electric car. It is a good start for BMW, but will only get better with next generations.

To his defense those are the only other hybrid sports cars to compare it to. They cost 10x more, because the are 10x better.

That's what I said about BMW. It will get much better. tesla's are at every corner where I live
Doubt if I see many i8s. I just don't care for how the Tesla looks. But competition is good for the consumer

I never understood this i8 or people's obsession with it. It looks terrible, it sounds terrible and its priced absolutely ridiculous....so many many more desirable cars at $140k. Why BMW? You don't listen to your customers do you? Electric or hybrid car for a commute/daily in the future, then gas guzzling performance car for the weekends!!! Nobody wants this.

Try it animal style, protein style (wrapped in lettuce instead of bun) -- I know it's a little unmanly, but the flavor the meat, grilled onions, and sauce take on with the cool clean lettuce exterior is unparalleled. It almost justifies the fries from a calorie offset perspective.

Oh man, this was a mistake to talk about right now....

I am in the same area that you are and I do see plenty of Teslas around town. What I see more of are Prius's and I HATE the looks of them. However, a Prius is not in the same league so we will leave it out of this conversation. Unlike you, I really like the looks of the Teslas and think they are extremely practical and useful. There is a reason why there are so many around town, think about it. The BMW i8 will sell great and there will be plenty of them around our area of town. There will also be a lot of i3's running around too, so I hope that you are not surprised when you see them as well. These are my opinions and observations and yes, competition is good so the future looks bright for all of us in terms of choices and options!

Because the Tesla looks like a normal car and many people just want to get from point A to B without fuss. Because it's a saloon with 4 doors and 4 seats (as opposed to 2+2).
Because it won't be a PITA to get in and out of the Tesla like it will be in the I8. The door frame sits actually higher than the bottom of the seats.
(OK for supercar, not OK for every day use)

You guys in North America always make me chuckle. In UK and Europe we pay a lot of money for gas. So when a car does 135mpg it means a lot to us. The i8 is for markets that either pay a lot for fuel or want to be green in some way. So the i8 is not for the US market. It's not meant to be an out and out sports car. For you guys we have the M6 etc.
The Tesla has it right, all electric. The whole point is that you plug it in at night. If you still make a bunch of noise AND still go to the gas pump then that's just a terrible decision. In truth the i8 took too long to come out.
Tesla has a motor and a reduction gear - that's it. The i8 has 2 engines and the electric bit. Who wants to service and repair all that?

Totally different cars. It's like comparing a 5-series and a 6-series. One is a sedan, the other is a coupe. Obviously, if you need a sedan, you buy the 5-series. If you're shopping for coupes, you lean toward the 6er.

Both the i8 and the Model S stand on their own merits. They target entirely different buyers.

This car is captivating. I remember going to the NAIAS in Miami when I was a kid. I remember seeing all the concept cars and having my mind blown; then years later being disappointed at the watered down versions that came to market. Chris is right. It's a rare thing to see a concept go from the showroom to the road with such dedication to the spirit of the concept. The i8 is a car for dreamers. I absolutely love it.

Show of hands; how many people want to shell out $150k+ for a 'supercar' that can barely 'dust a WRX' through the canyons?

While I find the i3 and i8 very interesting, I was just thinking last night the complete opposite of you when you say the future looks bright. When these cars depreciate to something more affordable, what do you do with them as a 2nd or 3rd owner? I bought my M3 second hand with 57k miles and no warranty (and it has never seen the inside of a shop, I DIY everything). While yes, I'd love an i8 when it becomes $70k, how on earth will I work on one? That's what I'm afraid of.

On another note, I'm test driving the i3 on Friday and can't wait!

Hmmmmmmmmmmm....

This car isn't about outright speed though, is it? It is the futuristic design inside out. It is the hybrid technology that helps you consume quarter of the gas that WRX consumes while still being able to dust it. It is the versatility of using in EV mode for 20 miles and the traction of the all wheel drive. Most importantly this is Bmw's first stab at this whole concept and a clean sheet design. Imagine what the 2nd or 3rd generation i8 would be like...

How many generations did it take Porsche to figure out to stop 911s from trying to kill its drivers through the canyons?
