Laughing, Kent. My wife bought me the same RC model, while I await my real car. Mine's due in January. Men with our toys!

I keep reading about the fascination so many on here have with this item. Ashamed to say though I have no idea what it is

What is that?

Stu, yes indeed. I bought two little die cast models too...for the kids

The i8 was supposed to have a rather funky, electronic key with a digital display. It was even listed as standard spec in the original UK brochure (which was subsequently pulled by BMW UK due to 'errors' in the brochure). However, BMW decided to pull the plug on the Display Key, much to the disappointment of many future i8 owners. N.B. most of the additional functionality of the Display Key is still available via the BMW i app (available on both Android and i Phones).

Pic of the infamous Display key below:-

They pulled it but now @Scott26 has said BMW got a lot of inquiries about it from the first customers, that the car of the future should have the key of the future; so while there is not any more detail, it apparently will be coming after all.

And to add to the story on this mysterious key fob, we've now heard that BMW may be providing them after all, in response to queries from some of the first owners as to what happened to the originally spec'd key.

Update note: just saw David's post after I posted mine with the same response. He and I are two of the people who have been wanting this hi-tech key to go with the hi-tech i8.

These are now available from BMW.
1/64 models of the BMW i3 in Caparis White , Solar Orange and Ionic Silver.
As is the BMW i8 in Protronic Blue , ionic Silver and Crystal White.
The i3 is also available in 1/43 and the i8 will be available in 1/43 and 1/18 scale.

In regards to the Display Key? The new BMW 7er will also inherit the display key but will also have a feature for autonomous parking.

Sophisto Grey will be featured on the 1/43 and 1/18 models.
Along with Protronic Blue and Ionic Silver.

A look at the 1/18 prototype.

Can I put in a request for 1:18 scale in Protonic Blue?

With a 1:18 scale Display Key

(Ok, just kidding about the display key, but would love a Protonic Blue 1:18 scale i8)

You don't.

I am positive that the 1:18 scale model will be able to pull 1.0 lateral Gs safely on your desk, though!

It is meant to be included in the price of the car. Replacement cost will likely not be fun to pay, though. It's still pure awesomeness.

Great review JasH

Good to know she's easier to get in an out of than an Exige. I had enough trouble with the 14 Elise CR at 6'5. My mate was worried I was going to crack his seats!
